If you are like me and a fan of "Lykkefanten" but do not speak Danish, you have probably been wondering for years what Skrubsak's untranslated dialog actually is in the toothbrushing scene. To wit:

This translation difficulty was mentioned some years back in the [REL] Lykkefanten thread. After watching it today for the umpteenth time, I considered asking if there were any FLM Danes who could understand the little boy's mushmouth, but then thought to check other subtitle sources online.

Translated from Danish to Portuguese to English, we get:

There. Now everything has fallen into place, and this tiny bit of dialog now translated brings whole new depths of understanding to the story. Of course if any FLM Danes find this translation inadequate, please chime in and enlighten us. I want my comprehension to be true and correct, not based on some falsehood.

Lykkefanten can be translated a couple ways, but this seemed to fit the best. There's no actual translation for Ogginoggin, it seems like a made-up kids' word, but she called him noodlepoop and I seem to remember seeing it used somewhere else.

Face palm! Heck, I knew "børn" were children, just like the Swedish "barn" ... yet I never bothered to translate the title either. I guess I figured "Little Big Sister" was just another unrelated alternate title, like IMDB has "Lykkefanten" as "Southern Comfort," presumably as a reference to the mother's alcoholism.

Since Danish is a "Germanic" language which often concatenates words, I split Lykkefanten into Lykke and fanten which Googletrans to Happiness Found. Lykkefanten as one word translates to The Lucky Fan which makes no sense, and Lykke fan ten is Happiness From Ten, which also makes no sense.

I doubt translators would know much about Southern Comfort which is a fruit-flavored whiskey. I've had it before in a drink made with 1 shot of Southern Comfort, one shot of sloe gin, and orange juice -- it's called a Slow Comfortable Screw.

Btw. I think I proofread and edited the subs for Buldermanden (see original thread). If no one still has a copy, I'll see if it is lying on one of my HDDs somewhere.

What, there aren't any alcoholic translators?!?!

Another possible interpretation is that it refers to the family's planned relaxed, idyllic vacation in Thailand, in Southeast Asia with a warm southern climate.

Anyway, plenty of movies have alternate international titles that bear no relation to any translation of the original, and are chosen because someone thinks they are more marketable. I think Happiness Found would have been a fine title. "Southern Comfort" has been used for several entirely different movies.
