Menino maluquinho - O filme (1994)

This was shown as a TV series on German TV some time ago, I'd love to see it again :D

Images at stargalaxy only show the boy :(
The principal character in Helvécio Ratton's delightful film has been adapted from a book and comic created by the Brazilian cartoonist Ziraldo, and tells the tale of a happy-go-lucky 10-year-old child growing up in a city in the 60s.
Maybe a clip from the movie here...

Yep it's a clip from the movie/TV series, definitely belongs in the boy section (the clip that is), shame the girl is not shown she is something else :D

Released. This is the german version of the main movie ("o filme"). There is another one, will come on german TV soon, but it's not as good.

I'm sure what I saw was a TV series though where in several episodes a girl steals the boys' affections, otherwise just a boy movie  anyone have any info on the TV series, if there was one?

The Nutty Boy (Menino Maluquinho - O Filme) 1995 WEB-DL 1080p x264_preview.png
Here is a 1080p WEB-DL in the 1.85 aspect ratio, with optional English subtitles included in the MKV file.

However, it seems that this movie was filmed in the 4/3 aspect ratio, because there is a small (15.10 MB) AVI file on eMule, showing clips of this movie in full 4/3 aspect ratio, and dubbed in German.

When comparing the scenes in common for both video files, we can see that the picture is cut and is missing some content vertically, for the 1.85 aspect ratio release, and it seems to be also the case for every available WEB-DL and DVDRip releases.

This small AVI file is in the 720x576 resolution, and there are small vertical black borders on the sides of the picture, which is common for DVD-Remux releases, so could it mean that it comes from a German PAL DVD version ?

Also, the only DVD version which can still be bought is a NTSC region 4 from 2007, and it's written "Letterbox (4x3)" on the back cover.

So, was the original 4/3 picture/video format kept intact, only for the German PAL DVD version, or were there older editions of the DVD in the original intact 4/3 aspect ratio, for all regions ?

Btw, it seems that this movie has been released in 1995, rather than in 1994, so this forum's thread title should be renamed.

About the aspect ratio:

What you observed is typical for movies that are released 1:85 widescreen in theaters. They are shot "flat" with a spherical lens in 4:3 aspect ratio and then cropped top and bottom to make them widescreen. (Cinemascope 2.35 is shot with an anamorphic lens that squeezes a wider image onto the film, which is then stretched back out to proper proportions when it is projected with an anamorphic lens projector.)

Typically when a 1:85 film was broadcast on TV in the late 1990s / early 2000s, it was presented in the full 4:3 ratio of the original camera negative because most TVs were still 4:3. It was not the "director approved theatrical version" but it DID show more image on the top and bottom. DVDs of that era would also often be presented in fullscreen aspect ratio, or have the option of either fullscreen or widescreen. As widescreen TVs took over the market, the alternate Fullscreen options disappeared.

The German dub version that I know of is a TVrip. See my post here: viewtopic.php?p=93972#p93972
Note: Uloz links will no longer work. Some of the files shared at TNT and BK may not work.
The German dub 4:3 is now shared on eMule: see the link at the end of this post.
Also, the only DVD version which can still be bought is a NTSC region 4 from 2007, and it's written "Letterbox (4x3)" on the back cover.
I see that too on Amazon Brazil and imported to Amazon US. Wow, it is expensive!

By "Letterbox (4x3)" that should mean that it has black bars encoded on the top and bottom of the image so that on an old 4x3 TV the image will appear letterboxed widescreen. If the DVD is played back on a modern widescreen TV then it will have black bars on all sides, unless the viewer makes use of the Zoom button to fill more of the TV screen.

(If it was an "Anamorphic Widescreen" DVD then the image would automatically be in Widescreen for either 4:3 TV or a modern 16:9, and would not require any Zoom feature.)
So, was the original 4/3 picture/video format kept intact, only for the German PAL DVD version, or were there older editions of the DVD in the original intact 4/3 aspect ratio, for all regions ?
Based on the evidence I can find at the.nextthing.club, it seems that the German-dubbed TVrip is the ONLY version in 4:3.
Infiniter Released the German-dubbed 4:3 version here:

I am now resharing it on eMule.

There is online disagreement about the year of the movie but I went with IMDB and rarefilmfinder and changed it to 1995.
Thanks for taking the time to write all of these interesting explanations.

However, that small (15.10 MB) AVI file I've talked about, doesn't display any TV broadcast logo in a corner of the video.

This small AVI file can still be found, using eMule's built-in search engine, but here is the link, just in case.

It seems that this file comes from an old website which was shut down, since, but it can be found on the Wayback Machine.

I've managed to find 2 web pages, showing a different edition of the DVD, than the one currently sold on Amazon: there's a photo of the front cover, allowing to see that the distributor's logo is different, but it's missing the back cover photo, which would have allowed to, at least, know the release year.

Also, the first web page indicates "4:3" for the TV format, and the second web page indicates "Fullscreen" for the TV format.

About the "Portuguese language DVD5 with English subtitles" link from your viewtopic.php?p=93972#p93972 post, I can't check it myself, since I don't have an account for the.nextthing.club and I cannot create a new one because the administrator has disabled new account registrations, but I'm wondering if this DVD5 has the original 4/3 picture/video format kept intact, or if it's cut/letterboxed ?

Btw, about the release year for this movie, there's also the Portuguese Wikipedia page ( https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menino_Ma ... _-_O_Filme ) which confirms that it's been released in 1995.
