Vendedora de rosas, La (1998)

13-year-old Monica leads a street life, making her living by selling flowers to couples in local nightspots, she is joined by 10-year-old Andrea who runs out of her house after her mother beats her.
This is an unbelievable film. "...Rosas" is graphic and truly disturbing as it captures the squalid life of the gamin in Medellín, Colombia. The children lead a life of sex, drugs, and prostitution without compunction. They are the sad result of broken homes. The film is a commentary on how the war on drugs has lead to the neglect of Colombia's poor. The irony of it all, the children are not hooked on cocaine but glue. They sniff the stuff out of paper bags, slowly depleting their young brain cells every time they use it.

A very disturbing, yet enlightening, film. It brings awareness to a growing problem in Colombia and questions the results of the Colombian government having to concentrate its efforts fighting the drug cartels and guerrilla insurgents rather than concentrating its efforts rehabilitating the children who will surely wind up contributing to the drug-insurgency problem in the future. The kids in the film did a wonderful job in their performance, really good acting, and the directing was very sharp, weaving the different subplots very carefully without having to clumsily intersect them. The film is in a sense a docudrama. Even though the film is not as effective as "Children of God," the film does succeed in making the viewer aware that there is more to the troubles in Colombia besides the things your read about in the New York Times.

A harsh film punctuated by the pretty girl, still depressing, but realistic and interesting.

Worth watching for the view of streetlife of young teens in Colombia.

I had been thinking about that movie for a while but Rich already went forward publishing it to the forum 15 years ago

Many of the actors that starred in the film are now dead or in prison.[4] Giovanni Quiroz was murdered in Medellín and Leidy Tabares was incarcerated for her involvement in the murder of a taxi driver in Medellín.[4] Elkin Giovanny Rodriguez (Don Hector in the film) and Alex Bedoya (Milton) are dead now. Some of them are still alive but living in tough conditions, such as Mileider Gil, who entered the world of prostitution a few years after the film was finished.

If I saw a lot of what happened to the actors now it was tragic unfortunately it was the same movie, because Victor Gaviria brought actors from those communes, the same heart of violence and gangs in Medellin just like the movie was not far from reality, that was the price of fame
