I just tried one - and with the volume turned up it was doing quite well. To subtitle 800-1300 lines would be a good 10-20 hours work though! And it doesn't work well if there's music / sound effects. But it would be better than nothing.

Had a go at the first 10 minutes using a phone app.
Sometimes it's brilliant. But half the time - zoo noises, kids playing, background music in the background - and it's a load of rubbish!
But this kind of gives you a rough idea what's being said... it's not professionally timed. Most are probably a second out. Need to find a free app that lets you see the wave-form beside the subtitles. But Subtitle edit wouldn't open the mkv... and I can't remember the one I was testing a year ago that did work!

00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:41,000
You took your medication well this week.

4
00:03:41,000 --> 00:03:47,000
You know you are not going to stop his treatment so as not to have seizures for too long.

5
00:03:49,000 --> 00:03:52,500
Everyon knows that the 6'oclock sun is bad for you

6
00:03:53,000 --> 00:03:55,000
Go get your lunch from the canteen

7
00:04:30,000 --> 00:04:31,000
Look out Kevin!

8
00:04:30,000 --> 00:04:30,000
I examined her.

???????

12
00:05:06,000 --> 00:05:07,000
Marie. What are you doing?

13
00:05:08,000 --> 00:05:10,000
Cheetah ?

14
00:05:21,900 --> 00:05:24,900
Ask for permission.

15
00:05:35,000 --> 00:05:38,000
Daddy says yes. We'll see each other.

16
00:06:27,000 --> 00:06:29,000
Excuse me for earlier

17
00:06:31,000 --> 00:06:33,000
? What made me apologise in life

18
00:06:35,000 --> 00:06:37,000
So she doesn't know you.

????

22
00:07:03,000 --> 00:07:05,000
Trying to get me to join a circus

23
00:07:07,000 --> 00:07:10,000
An acrobat on horseback who has been training for years without it happening ?

????????

25
00:07:15,000 --> 00:07:17,000
Let go of my heart.
I've always been a good for nothing who wouldn't listen to him (dad).

26
00:07:20,000 --> 00:07:22,000
Don't worry. I'll find a job.

27
00:07:22,100 --> 00:07:24,100
Find me a job.

28
00:07:25,000 --> 00:07:27,000
I didn't say it was easy.

29
00:07:29,800 --> 00:07:31,800
You still think in your little head

30
00:07:33,000 --> 00:07:35,000
People who say.

31
00:07:35,000 --> 00:07:35,000
People who say, everything comes out of here after a year (saying?)

32
00:07:39,000 --> 00:07:41,000
We spoke a 100 times.

33
00:07:42,000 --> 00:07:44,000
We had to do it.

34
00:07:46,000 --> 00:07:48,000
Now we start over and forget.

????????

37
00:08:17,000 --> 00:08:19,000
Stop saying bullshit.
When they did worse than us.

38
00:08:19,100 --> 00:08:21,100
Me, I get out of it.

39
00:08:26,000 --> 00:08:28,000
Of course madam ??
Take your medicine and tomorrow ??

40
00:08:43,000 --> 00:08:46,000
Definitely a little late to train the reserve players.

41
00:08:46,000 --> 00:08:49,000
At the slightest annoyance...

42
00:08:54,000 --> 00:08:58,000
I don't need to remember he was suicidal, remeber without your intervention, he is dead from the top of the lighthouse.

43
00:08:58,000 --> 00:09:01,000
I do not believe that putting him in the adoptive family of this young girl is the right solution.

44
00:09:01,000 --> 00:09:04,000
And why do you want them to continue to be passive.

45
00:09:03,000 --> 00:09:06,000
Will finally end up with people who love him, they are happy to welcome him.

46
00:09:06,500 --> 00:09:08,500
I would like to know that we cured the symptoms not the cause.

47
00:09:11,000 --> 00:09:13,000
Receive Madame Le Garrec this morning?

48
00:09:13,000 --> 00:09:15,000
I will come see you.

49
00:09:33,000 --> 00:09:35,000
He spent the week ???

50
00:09:35,000 --> 00:09:37,000
no because he arrived in La Rochelle like you ??

51
00:09:41,000 --> 00:09:43,000
Great, I still have a long time to wait!

?????????

55
00:10:14,000 --> 00:10:17,000
I hope these few years spent with us have been profitable for you.

56
00:10:18,000 --> 00:10:20,000
It's okay, you can go.

57
00:10:22,000 --> 00:10:25,000
You have any idea what you're going to do when you get out of here?

58
00:10:24,000 --> 00:10:25,000
Maurice?

59
00:10:27,000 --> 00:10:30,000
I trained 3 years to be a mechanic. It's not to make crystals in a pizzeria.

60
00:10:30,000 --> 00:10:32,000
You answer politely. Call me sir, if you please!

61
00:10:32,000 --> 00:10:35,000
No need to yell. I didn't say bad words.

62
00:10:37,000 --> 00:10:38,000
And you?

63
00:10:40,000 --> 00:10:43,000
With Momo family. Jean-Maurice, we plan to work for a mechanic.

64
00:10:44,000 --> 00:10:46,000
It's you, Petia (?)

65
00:10:46,000 --> 00:10:46,000
What are your plans?

66
00:10:51,000 --> 00:10:53,000
Little one. We asked you a question!

67
00:10:54,000 --> 00:10:55,000
I have to answer?

68
00:10:55,000 --> 00:10:56,000
Simple information.

69
00:10:56,000 --> 00:10:59,000
Go through the mechanical course with your 2 ducks.

70
00:11:01,000 --> 00:11:04,000
For the professional internship offered by the centre.

71
00:11:04,000 --> 00:11:05,000
If I know what I'm going to do. I did the internship in areas that will never be.

72
00:11:08,000 --> 00:11:09,000
Ask the question.

73
00:11:10,000 --> 00:11:12,000
But I reassure you. You don't have to answer.

74
00:11:13,000 --> 00:11:14,000
Clown (circus)

75
00:11:22,000 --> 00:11:23,500
What do you want?

76
00:11:24,000 --> 00:11:25,000
Goodbye?

77
00:11:26,000 --> 00:11:27,000
See you later then.

78
00:11:30,500 --> 00:11:34,500
Send me a message. And the best to you. Go off on a good basis.

79
00:11:35,000 --> 00:11:36,000
Forget your past.

80
00:11:36,000 --> 00:11:37,000
Will not be difficult

Need to find a free app that lets you see the wave-form beside the subtitles. But Subtitle edit wouldn't open the mkv... and I can't remember the one I was testing a year ago that did work!
Thank you for your effort!

Did you use Video -> Open video file in subtitle edit? You can't drag 'n drop because there are no embedded subtitles in the mlv, but you should be able to open it in the program. I was able to

Found the good subtitling software I'd used a year ago for something else.
Aegisub 3.2.2
It has a great audio analyzer where you select the audio based on the spikes (see top right screen) even lets you zoom horizontally and vertically - then type the text. Also plays the video without issue. Seems the most intuitive for creating new subtitles!
See screenshot below.

Using the awesome Aegisub I've subtitled the first 30mins of the film - and it allows for pinpoint timing to the dialogue start point + a bit more at the end for slower readers / or until the next line of dialogue!
There's a lot of subtitles that will say ' ? '. They'll be timed. It's just sometimes Google can't hear over the background noise. But Google is doing a great job on 70% of them, ok on 10% of the others, and you can follow the story - which is what I wanted. Rather than watching this movie sequel without knowing what anyone's saying we'll soon have a good idea - and if a native speaker can work with my timed file they'll find 80% of the work and the timing done!
It is taking about an hour per 5minutes of dialogue though - so it's not a small task! I'm on about line 380!
