One Murder – Two Timeframes – Three Persectives
Murderland is an emotional and passionate thriller that tells a traumatic murder story through the eyes of three central characters: Carrie the daughter of the murdered woman, Douglas Hain, the detective in charge of the investigation and Sally the murder victim. Murderland is a knife edge thriller of revenge, redemption and rough justice, where three different perspectives eventually enable us to see the truth.
“Following the success of ITV1’s Monday night thriller season, we’re delighted to commission Murderland. It’s also a great coup to have Robbie Coltrane return to ITV1 Drama in the role of DI Douglas Hain,” said Laura. Murderland is produced by Kate Croft and Dave Edwards for Touchpaper, Scotland.
“Robbie Coltrane heads a marvellous cast and combining the talents of David Pirie and Catherine Morshead on this project. Murderland promises to be as much a why-dunit as a whodunit. As much a love story as a murder story,” says Kate Croft.
Three part crime thriller telling the emotional story of a young woman's quest to discover the truth about her mother's death. Thestory is told in two timeframes and from three different points of view.
1/3 - Carrie's Story
In 1994, 13-year-old Carrie returns home to a bloody crime scene. She may have been in the house earlier at the same time as her mother’s brutal killer, may even have seen him.
Carrie can never free herself of the horror and wrench in her emotional life. As she grows to adulthood as Carol, she has to revisit the past to free herself of it so she can move on and marry the man she loves.
2/3 - Hain's Story
In the present day, Carol persuades Hain to return to London with her and reinvestigate her mother's murder, focusing on the original suspects and the massage parlour where she worked. As the detective relives the night of the killing, his perspective as the policeman who was in charge of the case reveals a different story and new clues that Carol failed to pick up on as a teenager.
3/3 - Carol's Story
In the present day, Carol's obsessive drive to solve her mother's murder finally yields results when she and retired detective Hain discover why Sally was killed and who was responsible. But the journey takes Carol into a world her mum had always concealed, and there is a high price to pay for uncovering the truth about the fateful night in 1994.
