For me this is one of America's great directors with films like this one, Happiness and another where a family drive many miles to find out what has happened to the husband (don't remember name and not going to spoil by telling more). Basically this guy takes a theme, and makes a film which totally exposes everything to do with it - no matter how bad that might be.
