[REL] Paradize 89 (2018) [Latvia]
Re: [REL] Paradize 89 (2018) [Latvia]
The subs are actually in Estonian

Really? I selected Latvian to English. Good old auto-detect must've kicked in and changed it.lara wrote:The subs are actually in Estonian

Looked all over the place for some indication of an eventual bluray release but found nothing. Festival circuit films like this one often take several years to appear on disc. Reasonably good chance it'll come with English subs though. An ad I saw for a British screening of the movie said it would be subtitled in English, so the studio clearly does have them.
I'll check for a BD of this title every so often, like I do with certain others, and post it here when I find one.

I've checked the subs. First of all I have to say that Deadman's translation is unbelievably good! If Google Translate was used, Deadman must have spent days fixing all the nonsense. Here are the corrections I made:

Some of what I did involved taking awkward phrasing and making it sound more natural. For instance
I'm principally not speaking Russian.
isn't how someone would probably put it. So I wrote I'm not speaking mostly Russian, to indicate Maija didn't want to spend the visit speaking Russian most of the time.
Thanks so much for your corrections lara! Sometimes there's just no substitute for human translation.

It's my poor English... What the girl actually means is that she does not speak any Russian as a protest. I guess you would say "not speaking Russian on principle"?deadman wrote:Some of what I did involved taking awkward phrasing and making it sound more natural. For instance

Okay, yeah. You'd say "I don't speak Russian on principle." Is that also what Paula meant talking to Jonas?lara wrote:It's my poor English... For online translations, usually you obtain better results with https://www.deepl.com/en/translator (that takes the context into account).
Apparently this film is proposed with English subtitles

Yeah, I noticed some of the festival screenings advertised English subs. That's why I figured the eventual bluray release should have them.Tiny Blondie wrote:For online translations, usually you obtain better results with https://www.deepl.com/en/translator (that takes the context into account).

DeepL looks interesting. It still mangles things, but gives a different result than either Google or Bing so it's obviously not based on either. Three different mangled translations (along with context) gives you more information than two. The language selection is still limited so it wouldn't have helped with this film. Most of the time it would come in handy though. Thanks for bringing the site to my attention.
