This elegant, funny, richly satisfying portmanteau film from Latvia sees four talented directors take on the childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age of one character. As he grows and changes, some quirks and obsessions remain the same, including his strange affinity with birds (the title refers to the start of birdhunting season). With each filmmaker maintaining the mood but bringing his or her own cast to the story, this is a triumphant formal experiment.

This intriguing omnibus project from Latvia features contributions from four of the country’s most promising young filmmakers, each of whom depicts a different defining period — childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age — in a single individual’s life. The segments are loosely connected but also play against and reference each other to form a single narrative thread. The film’s subject, played by four different actors, is Teodors. A junior hockey star in his youth, a businessman in his maturity, and given to wandering the forests in both childhood and old age, Teodors struggles his entire life to find his place. The film’s title, Vogelfrei, is not a Latvian word but a German one, and means “free as a bird.” “The simple, unfussy storytelling and breathtaking photography relate universal themes and issues from four distinct voices that cohere nonetheless to tell a singular tale” (Pusan I.F.F.) Colour, 35mm, in Latvian and Russian with English subtitles. 95 mins.

It's a near run thing. The only downloader so far has but 1 chunk. He has an eselkult.tk-tag in his nick. "Vogelfrei" was posted in ESELKULT, but that was the German title of the 1985 Agnes Varda - movie "Sans toit ni loi" with the 17 yo Sandrine Bonnaire. That might be another interesting target for this board. It might be an error of the downloader, but the file size doesn't fit for any version of the Varda-movie.

In winter in the south of France, a young woman is found frozen in a ditch. She's ill kempt, a vagabond. Through flashbacks and brief interviews, we trace her final weeks, as she camps alone or falls in with various men and women, many of whom project their needs onto her or try to give her life direction. She squats in an old house smoking hash with a man, falls for a Tunisian laborer and works beside him pruning grape vines, stays with a couple shepherding goats, meets an agronomist trying to save plane trees, gets tipsy with an old woman, and has an offer to appear in porn films

But after all, it might be a TV rip of the Latvian transmission on October 5th, 2008!

U R right...it's a Western of 1949...
