Port forwarding with UPnP

I'm currently testing a new VPN service, which offers UPnP Port Forwarding.

It works with eMule and I get a high ID, when I enable UPnP in the connection settings of eMule.

I can't enter my TCP and UDP ports from eMule in their app or in the web interface, I only have to enable port forwarding.

I'm happy, because I have a high ID again, but I have a technical question: Can someone tell me, how this works? Just curious...
