Laura Dekker has sailing in her blood. In 1995 she was born on a boat off the coast of New Zealand during her parents own circumnavigation of the world. She spent the first five years of her life on a boat. She became the owner of her first boat at six years old and learned to sail it by herself. At 13 she sailed all the way to England where she was detained by authorities. When they contacted her father to pick her up, he told them she was perfectly capable of returning on her own but they wouldn't let her leave until he arrived.

That wouldn't be the first time authorities would try to prevent her from sailing. That same year she started making plans to sail around the world solo. Although her father was supportive of her ambitions, the government tried to squash her dreams by making her a ward of the state. After a 10 month long legal battle she was finally able to start her journey when she was 14. Almost a year and a half later she became the youngest person ever to sail around the world solo. This film is the result of a collaboration between first-time filmmaker Jillian Schlesinger and Laura Dekker and is a very personal look at her journey.

How many 14 year olds get the opportunity to live out their dreams? How many of them have dreams that don't involve fame or money? Many people thought that she was spoiled or crazy. That she cared more about "the record" than the journey. Nothing could be further from the truth. Her accomplishment proved her to be brave and resourceful. And after watching the movie I realized that all the people who were against her making the trip, who wanted her parents arrested for child endangerment, don't know the first thing about sailing. You really don't need to know a whole lot about anything besides sailing to do what she did. I think it's sad how risk averse we've become as a society and especially when it comes to our children. Her kind of determination and adventurous spirit is becoming increasingly rare and unfortunately is not encouraged as much as it should be.

All the footage captured at sea was either filmed by Laura herself or by the multiple cameras mounted around her boat. Partly in Dutch with hardcoded English subtitles and partly in broken English with a heavy Dutch accent (and hardcoded English subtitles). Here is a short clip from the movie.
