The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the professional organization responsible for protecting and perpetuating the art of motion pictures, defines any film as “short” if its runtime is less than 40 minutes, including credits. In every other way creatively and professionally, a short film is indistinguishable from its longer-running “feature film” counterpart.
At FLM we go by the Academy rules for classifying shorts, even though there are other film organizations with different rules about runtime. Everyone has to pick a rule and stick to it, so that awards are given in the correct category. My own thinking is that anything under an hour is "short", and F* Hollywood and the Oscars.
Anyway ... for the purposes of a general discussion about "favorite Shortfilms", I think that 52 minute and 48 minute films still count, even if they are in a different thread here. I won't nitpick. Great choices, marvingray!
Old "Top of the Pops"-style videos of musicians miming to playback is uninteresting, and just the most basic form of operating a camera. The really good music videos may be the exception, but there is a long history of music videos with narrative: they tell a story in condensed form. Musicals are considered films / movies ("The Sound of Music", lots of kids in that one too!) and they are mostly just a series of music videos held together with sometimes absurd plotting. (Like the ridiculous "Xanadu" with ONJ .) Make a musical shorter and shorter until it is only ONE song, and your short musical is a music video. The only difference is the number of songs and the total length, not the content itself. If someone manages to tell a whole story in 3 minutes with music as a backdrop, that is a big accomplishment as far as I am concerned. Mimzy's video has a story far huger than its tiny runtime: viewtopic.php?f=74&t=7717 https://vimeo.com/105150051
It is true that they thought of it as a trailer for a feature film that never got made.
Admittedly most music videos are at best just exercises in style, like Britney Spears "I'm A Slave 4 You". I will not claim there is a story there, just lots of writhing and sweating. And regardless, music videos should be kept in a different section at FLM because they are definitely a different TYPE of short, and generally NOT what movie watchers are looking for!
Let me add to my list of favorite shorts: Skrillex - First Of The Year (Equinox)
