Really? AVC1 is the same as H264, isn't it? It is still pretty darn common (at least for torrented videos) for "bottom of the barrel". How about ASF or DX50 or DivX for "old and bottom of the barrel"? My bluray player loves the much better H265 but my "old" computer does not, otherwise I would be all in for it. But licensing costs for H265 are higher than for H264, which keeps certain large tech companies away from it. Google and Amazon are struggling for profits, darnit!

But really, is YouTube still pushing use of avc1 / H264 for newer videos? If so, then I understand that they are shooting themselves in the foot if they want more efficient streaming. There are newer royalty-free codecs that seem to take less storage space and require less streaming bandwidth "for the same quality" :? , like VP9 (which I see often on YouTube videos) and AV1. Of course there are some of the same problems with older equipment not handling it that H265 has. If someones uploads an H264 video, does YouTube compress it and keep it as H264, or do they compress it with VP9 or AV1?

What am I misunderstanding?

Of course no matter how good a codec, it can still be compressed beyond any benefits the codec may provide.

avc1 (as I understand it) is like MPEG1, it's a predecessor to the avc you see for example in an .m2ts file from a blu-ray. Not to be confused with AV1, which is superior to h265 - and royalty free. VP9 is what YouTube uses for videos at 2K and higher resolutions, or at 1080p for channels that reach some not exactly spelled out level of bigness.

YouTube videos are horribly compressed though. In some cases it actually ruins the viewing experience.

MPEG1 would be awful but I don't think YouTube uses it. It was used on VCDs and it even dates back to 1991. MPEG1 Audio was the first version of MP3s! (I never knew that, just read it now.)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-1
Advanced Video Coding (AVC), also referred to as H.264 or MPEG-4 Part 10
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Video_Coding
(It dates back to 2004. So it is indeed old!)
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), also known as H.265 and MPEG-H Part 2, is a video compression standard designed as part of the MPEG-H project as a successor to the widely used Advanced Video Coding (AVC, H.264, or MPEG-4 Part 10).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Effi ... deo_Coding
(It dates back to 2013.)

I won't argue that YouTube is overcompressed, I was just getting nerdy about the codecs. I know I have seen VP9 on 1080p video, whatever that unspecified level of bigness is! Probably professional officially-released videos, like a short film released by the owners.

Are they worried about DMCA lawsuits from the US and Europe? I'm sure Putin's courts would respond to those lawsuits in a timely and receptive manner. Wouldn't want to sour the good relations we have, now would we?
I mean they do host many films in HD/1080p that you would never see kn YouTube due to dmca or even age/nudity restrictions. I got a dozen links saved up for when I just want to stream these FLM related films from anywhere.

But I assume they also have Limited disk space resources compared to google/YouTube making pulling in billions in ad revenue each quarter.

I haven’t compared my old 1080p YouTube downloads with the current 1080p streams of the same Video but people in the past have pointed out that especially the source is important: if you upload a 4k video (hevc) the YouTube 1080p version will look much better than if you upload your own 1080p H264 encode.

Sorry to hear that, but glad you were able to get it. What problems did you encounter? Any feedback would be helpful.

mi didn't wanna pay for it, so it make me wait 5 hours between chunks. I could get 2 chunks at a time, of 11 chunks.
Also, 10GB for a 90 minute movie is ridiculously bloated, a CO2 vomiting waste of bandwidth and server time. And diskspace. I downsized to 960p x 540p and 900 KB/S which gave NO visual difference whatsoever on my 40 inch TV.

For those who prefer smaller files,
1080p 1.96Gb German with external English subtitles, seeded: https://yts.mx/movies/tiger-milk-2017

EDIT: It took me 10 minutes to download.

If you have a VPN you should be able to disconnect and reconnect, then download more from MEGA.

10 GB is fairly typical for bluray rips. I don't understand the appeal of super-small, low bitrate bluray rips unless your internet connection is slow or it's for viewing on a phone (or other device with a small screen) where you honestly can't tell the difference. Talking head interview type clips may show no visible flaws even on a larger screen. But dark scenes, or scenes with a lot of rapid motion, look bad at low bitrates.

A 540p version on a full size TV? It's literally not possible to halve the number of lines in an image without losing a noticeable amount of picture quality. You may still find it quite watchable - I watch DVDs and DVD spec videos all the time on my 4K TV - but saying it's decent quality isn't the same as being unable to tell the video apart from full HD. If you don't see any visual difference you may need glasses, or an updated prescription.
