[REL] Walkabout (1971)
Re: [REL] Walkabout (1971)
Thank you, but please understand that a "high-definition digital transfer" is comparatively ancient movie mastering tech for discs. This is sourced from the original Criterion blu-ray from 2010, which is also the date of the rutracker post. That blu-ray was great, but we have gone better since then. Anyone interested in such a monster file should probably keep their eyes peeled for a newer version and mux in any desired dubs if needed.

In your opinion, which of the currently available on FLM versions is the best?Night457 wrote: Fri Sep 15, 2023 3:47 pm Thank you, but please understand that a "high-definition digital transfer" is comparatively ancient movie mastering tech for discs. Re: [REL] Walkabout (1971)
Sorry, I do not have any of the FLM versions. I have multiple versions on home media, so I stick with the discs. (I might even have an old VHS.) So I can not give an opinion based on actually looking at a rip.
P.S.: I took a quick look at what is here. Deadman's would be the best, a large version sourced from the original Criterion blu-ray. There SHOULD be a version forthcoming from the Scene from the new Criterion 4k, although that would be huge.
There are RARBG (and other?) torrents from 2020 that ought to be from the later, upgraded UK Second Sight edition.

I didn't know about this better version of Second Sight.
I found it on torrents.
Also on the same site.

The only problem is that this version Length: 1:40:06.333 , 34 seconds less than the earlier one.
Re: [REL] Walkabout (1971)
Reviewer Svet at blu-ray.com favors the ORIGINAL Criterion disc over all other versions, mainly due to color balance issues.

Naturally different people have different opinions. I think I prefer the Second Sight version, but could that be because I spent so much to obtain it?
(Heck, I even read the included book.) I am pleased that the Russians have kept up with upgrading their remuxes!
Since there are those who prefer the old blu-ray, I guess I can NOT just reject out of hand the first rutracker file you linked or deadman's release. They are certainly NOT going to be bad. I just am greedy and constantly want better, although I am not ready to spend the cash necessary for the latest disc version.
Someone with a lot of disc space and a lot of interest in watching it multiple times could download all the versions.

Re: [REL] Walkabout (1971)
I am not about to dig out all my discs to compare right away, but I can pretty much guarantee the 34-second difference is due to differences in credits or precredit sequences. I have yet to read any fans squawling about "they cut my favorite scene", although admittedly I have stayed away from the blu-ray forums lately.
If I have the energy I'll look into it later.

You are very right in what you write. Second Sight version look better.

EDIT:
Unfortunately I still don't know why there is a difference of 36 sec. Was something neutered or maybe some kind of advertisement or logo added.
Re: [REL] Walkabout (1971)
Reviewer Svet infuriates the pixel-peepers in the blu-ray.com forums much of the time for a number of reasons, but I still appreciate his opinion even though I often disagree with it. I am sure it annoys the complainers that he happens to like a lot of the movies that they do. I know that many people including myself often have problems with revisionist color grading -- so I definitely want to consider his comments on the matter.
I will check out your caps-a-holic link, keeping in mind that the screen for my laptop has its limitations.
I looked at my discs while I was thinking about it.
This is an art film and the British censors are always tolerant of those. They are upper-class snobs and worry more about the movies for the proles, like Italian cannibal exploitation flicks. (I love those too.) The censors did not care about the skinny-dipping nudity, nor the abundant clubbing, boomeranging and spearing of wildlife for food.
Anyway, it is your latter guess. The Criterion version has Criterion and Janus animated logos at the beginning, then the text explanation of a "walkabout", then the 20th Century Fox opening, then the movie itself. The studio branding along with the black screen after it takes up the extra seconds.
The Second Sight does not have the Criterion, Janus, and Fox distractions, just the pre-movie walkabout text and the movie. P.S.: I checked out the screencap comparisons, even though those who obsess over them can get annoying. I can't help but look at them too!
Reviewer Svet was comparing the old Criterion with the new Criterion rather than the Second Sight so I don't know how much I can relate his review to these screencaps. However, I expect the newer Criterion to be closer to the Second Sight in detail and color grading. He did acknowledge the greater detail visible in the new version, and this is readily apparent in the pics. I can ALSO see the different color grading he worried about; sometimes the Second Sight is too BLUE in some of the images that just strike me as WRONG. (Whites should be white, not blue.) But on balance I prefer it.

I could confuse this with another film but if I remember correctly I contacted the distributor and they said the second sight one isn’t a new transfer?Night457 wrote: Fri Sep 15, 2023 4:42 pm I am not about to dig out all my discs to compare right away, but I can pretty much guarantee the 34-second difference is due to differences in credits or precredit sequences. Either way, I’m seeing a 60GB UHD/2160p remix has been realeres by the scene just 10 hours ago.
Re: [REL] Walkabout (1971)
The film in Criterion distribution starts exactly 34 seconds later than in Second Sight.
So the difference in duration explained.
