I use Deepl and translate in parts of 5,000 characters. I continuously check each line because I care about the quality of the translation. It is indeed spoilerific for me. The biggest benefit of this approach is for others because they get good quality subtitles from me.
I try to watch a film I've subtitled after a few weeks. So that I forget the content.
Interesting fact. Deepl can be pleasantly surprising. Sometimes if Deepl comes across a phrase or a piece of poetry, he recognises it and has a professional translation ready. Once, he even added a note of his own who was the author of the translated quote.
OMG you put the work into a quality translation before you even find out if you like the movie! That's impressive. I have to assume that you really enjoy the process of translation, so that you get satisfaction from it even if it turns out that you think the movie really stinks!
From the subtitle translations I have done, I find that watching it helps me understand the context and make better translations. Sometimes there is a movie I have seen without any subtitles, and later I get subs in some language or another. So I watch it again perhaps with a rough translation, then correct the subtitles, then watch it AGAIN, then go back and correct the mistakes I missed and reevaluate parts of the translation. This is why I need to LIKE the movie, although admittedly the translating part takes longer than the watching.
Mind you, I have not done this in awhile because there are fewer movies that I am falling in love with.

I don't translate films blind.
First I try to find out, to gather as much information as possible, whether it is worthwhile to start translating.
For example, the opinions I find on FLM, including yours, help me to make a decision.

I also watch Russian and Czech films and even ex-You films in the original. I can speak and understand Russian. Czech and Balkan languages are quite understandable for a Pole.
So, you are saying that you have not been quite brave enough to watch a film with a totally unfamiliar language unless you had subtitles to help?
I have done this many times, but ignorant me has only one language I know to go on. In the past it has been because I am interested in a movie but there was no subtitle to help. Lately, I have deliberatedly chosen such films for a viewing BECAUSE I do not have to read or listen closely, I can just watch. It challenges my brain to see how well I can comprehend what is going on WITHOUT the benefit and necessity of language comprehension.

but the translations work well and we can tell if they are reasonably correct or not in foreign languages.
Question for anyone who knows the depths of settings in SubtitleEdit. This question is related to using deepL.
I see there is a handy option to remove line breaks from subtitle text. Is there any way to remove time codes as well, so I can output or copy/paste just the pure dialogue? If not, is this a option on any other subtitle editing software that has this feature? If not a subtitle software, does anyone know of anything that can help "deformat" en masse?
