NOW for SUBTITLES.
There is a German subtitle on opensubtitles.org. It looks like it was originally color-coded but had the color-coding removed, so hyphens ( - ) were missing that would indicate speaker differences. It had minimal Hearing-Impaired (HI) information, but it was not distinguished from the dialog with brackets [ ]. The dialog is simplified as is typical for subtitles, so it is NOT a complete word-for-word transcription. That is not really a problem, as it still expresses the necessary meaning.
With all 3 versions of the video I have seen, the sync wanders all over the place: sometimes early, sometimes late, and often much longer than it ought to be. I went through and manually synced it line by line. I split lines when it seemed necessary and shortened many of them. I indicated different speakers in the same subtitle lines with hypens ( - ). I indicated Hearing-Impaired information with brackets [ ]. In two spots I used Whisper to fill in a few missing lines of dialog, and the German it generated at least seems reasonable. I went through the file a second time to do a little more sync clean-up.
After that was done, I did a plain simple old-fashioned one-line-at-a-time Google translation to English, none of that AI nonsense that retimes the lines to suit itself and messes up my painstakingly created synchronization. I did NOT review that translation so I did NOT correct it. Some other motivated individual can use Whisper to get a more natural translation where plain Google fails. I have watched the movie twice in German in the SubtitleEdit preview window, so I am done with it for now. I understood the emotions expressed even if my comprehension of German is sorely lacking.
For ghost's HD version with the video glitch, I repeated the 6 lines of dialog for the repeated footage.
