Someone know if it is a uncropped version of this movie (in 4:3 ratio)? ?
I only know this movie in widescreen. Maybe the VHS was in 4:3.

@ghost thank you for the answer ! ! !

The post by starfish21 on page 1 of this thread shows a couple different DVD covers, including this one:
The-Blue-Lagoon-1980-2.jpg
The Rating on the spine is M 15+, which is Australian; but the rating on the back is R and it is Region 1 North American. The Australian DVD Region is 4. I wonder if the picture is a photoshop cut-and-paste?

ANYWAY ... look closely at the specifications on the back and you will see that it has both Widescreen and Fullscreen presentations. The early North American DVDs were 2-sided, with Widescreen on one side and Fullscreen on the other. This was "Open Matte" with more screen information on the top and bottom in the Fullscreen presentation. The film was matted in Widescreen for the theaters. The BluRays are also matted to the Widescreen theatrical presentation. I do not see any particularly interesting additional visuals in the Open Matte version, so it is unlike a certain earlier Brooke Shields movie. However, if someone is simply a fan of Open Matte versions, the old DVD is the only source I know of.

It does not surprise me that "The Blue Lagoon" is on Netflix, as it used to broadcast repeatedly on HBO back in the 1980s. But I am not sure, do you mean that specifically the FULLscreen version is on Netflix, or just the movie in general?

May I ask, where you found it? I was hoping to find a PAL DVD, but all I found, were in widescreen.
It seems that your DVD is very rare.

You can guess, what I'm gonna do. ;)

NOT!

It is a mainstream DVD release that I picked up new at a retail outlet or Amazon years ago, and now it is available used on Amazon or eBay for a few dollars. This was a VERY popular Brooke film in the U.S. -- at least in private, and for regular audiences. I think the critics professed to loathe it. (Screw 'em.) It was also shown frequently on cable TV along with "Star Wars" and "9 to 5", and I am guessing those were also Fullscreen presentations. It is possible I have it recorded from HBO on videotape somewhere, but I don't THINK I do. I think I just watched it when it happened to be on...

When I was looking into what DVD versions had what yesterday, I also noticed that the PAL versions seemed to be all Widescreen. Perhaps this is because they came later or because Americans were initially very resistant to the black bars on the top and bottom and demanded old-fashioned fullscreen presentations to take up all of the screen on their traditional TVs. Like you, I was more interested in the greater number of lines of resolution if there had been a 1.33 PAL DVD.

Actually I did not expect you to be interested in this one because I think of Brooke being "so darn OLD" in it, but I guess perhaps you are more interested in the younger and cuter version of her character in the beginning! :lol: Once I saw you posting I sort of guessed what might happen...

Yeah, that might explain it. Too bad, becaue 576p maybe even would look better. But this NTSC DVD is really of high piture quality. Very unusual.
