Decent enough French movie that wears it's age better than expected. First beach scene just about qualifies as OT for those interested in such things.

This disturbing French drama comments upon the effects of excessive television violence on children. It's set within a seaside villa, where under the care of a nanny, a group of children spend most of their days watching violent television shows. One day they all go to the beach. The nanny dozes while they frolic. For a joke, they load the snoozing servant into a rubber raft and set her out to sea. She panics when she wakes up and ends up drowning. The kids do try to save her, but when they fail they decide to run wild instead of reporting the incident. The death means nothing to them until a threatening stranger appears and tells them he witnessed it all. He then proceeds to terrify them with his predictions about what the authorities will do with such killers. The children turn around and get their own kind of revenge.

Do not read my cranky opinion:

Spoiler: I watched plenty of violent TV in the 1970s and 1980s but I never drowned anyone because I was not a spoiled rich brat with spoiled rich parents who needed to hire a nanny! Nyah! I'd bet anything that the indifference to the wellbeing of other people comes from parents rather than TV, no matter the economic and social class of the children. Anyway, off my soapbox.

I can remember, that I watched it many many many years ago on German TV with the title "Der unheimliche Fremde".

It's a big production with Alain Delon. Here must be a HD version somewhere...

In my admittedly brief search I have not found any HD.

Emule has DVDrips and AVIs which are no doubt also SD, blizzardkid has DVDrips, and TNT has a DVDrip from long ago. TNT also posted the German DVD9 ISO with German or French audio and no subs, back in February:

I already found the full DVD in usenet, but only with German audio.

I just wonder, why they never restored this movie to HD. Well, someone else has to do it.

... and THAT is why I posted about the availability ...

I verified that the TNT DVD9 does have both German dub and origninal French. (Although I trust TNT of course.)

Alain Delon is probably still popular at least among older people like us but it seems like in this one he is basically a supporting character, rather than the super chill lead? That might explain there being less of an interest in a restoration.

On Amazon.fr I found the "Attention, les Enfants Regardent" French 2003 DVD, the book, and the CD.
I also saw a listing for the "Der unheimliche Fremde" German 2021 DVD, which is of course at Amazon.de.

Maybe they are waiting for those copies to sell out before they restore it to HD.
