It's not much of a difference, after a short time online my computer didn't run the video neither 4k, nor 2k and even less in 720p60, and I tried it on the tv and I see that on Youtube the limit is up to 1080p.kernuo wrote: Mon Jun 10, 2024 1:56 pm The problem is which alternative. Vimeo gets taken down quite easily and there are not that many file hosts that accept 4K, at least not without seriously re-encoding the source.
Better option would be suggesting to upload it to some kind of cloud storage like MEGA.
Too bad. 4K version would be amazing.

YouTube seriously re-encodes the source, so uploaders choose 4k to force the streaming to have the quality of 1080p. (Regular YouTubers with videos posted multiple times a week of just them TALKING do that because their fans want to see them in crisp resolution I guess!) That is probably what happened in this case with the edited version. Sully is not impressed with the supposed 4k!
Vimeo allows for full-size original files. I don't know what kind of censorship issues they have but it is certainly not on the level of YouTube's. The actual rights holders as uploaders are less likely to have a takedown, although they may have to restrict the video to "Adults Only" with a login.
OK.ru and VK.com are unlikely to censor this film. I do not know what kind of re-encoding they do.
I think the filmmakers are more interested in getting an audience for their documentary via streaming than arguing about a few seconds of nudity or dealing with pirate sharing sites that have a history of legal problems.

And here I was fooling myself it was the real 4K.Night457 wrote: Mon Jun 10, 2024 4:59 pm YouTube seriously re-encodes the source, so uploaders choose 4k to force the streaming to have the quality of 1080p. I discovered in an interview that palaeontologist Tim Flannery was the one who orchestrated the Kwaio tribe's expeditions and outreach.

Maybe he should upload higher quality version of it to Amazon Prime, so that people can support his work. I'm actually curious about the camera setup.Sully23 wrote: Sun Jun 09, 2024 10:57 pm Maybe there is a remote possibility to contact the documentary maker, 2 years ago I had suggested to him to use other alternatives to Youtube.
I'll bet the native resolution is 1080p upscaled to 4K, because youtube seriously downgrades quality with their reencoding.
Re: [REL] The Kwaio - Remote Tribes [2019] [Germany]
I think it was made with a professional 4k camera.
On the other hand I don't think it will be seen on Amazon because it's a 'home video' it's not a documentary for a film festival and it doesn't even have IMDB records, he uses YT because it has more coverage.
