Game warden Miller lives on an isolated island off the Carolina coast. The only other inhabitant is Evvie, an innocent and naive thirteen-year-old girl. Miller is sexually attracted to the girl.

When Traver, a black musician on the run from a lynch mob after being falsely accused of rape, arrives on the island Miller wants to turn him in and get him out of his way. But Evvie likes Traver and protects him. When a preacher arrives from the mainland to "rescue" Evvie from her situation, Traver's presence is discovered. Miller is now forced to decide whether to turn Traver over to the mob and in so doing lose his standing in the girl's eyes.

Set in the American South on a remote coastal island, a black man fleeing a lynch mob meets a white sheriff and a recently orphaned 13 year old white girl. How would a true innocent react to encroaching absurdities such as racism, unwanted sexual advances, and tyranny? Bunuel provides the multifaceted answers in this stupendous masterpiece.

Thanks for reminding me, Dave! I was going to post this a few weeks back, but found another film I wanted to put up first and never got back to this one. Can't find a date of birth for featured actress Key Meersman, but I did turn up an old notice from December of 1960 advertising a screening of this movie at the Museum of Modern Art in New York: it says that "principal players are Zachary Scott, Bernie Hamilton, and 14-year-old stage actress Key Meersman." So at least we know her age at the time.

For those who want the full DVD here it is. The disc I'm posting is a PAL version from France. There's a short BTS feature narrated entirely in French, but it's nothing special so you're not missing much if you don't speak the language. What matters is that the main movie has its original English audio. If you want subs for that, opensubtitles.org has a number of sets to choose from. Enjoy!
