Well based on your recommendation, I will grab the 2004 version as well. And I thank you.

I personally have no issues with Dakota or Denzel, of course! Maybe I was just being a grump, too.

You, a grump? I seriously doubt it!

But I can imagine a reaction of "What, a REMAKE too? Remakes stink!" In this case the story is adapted from a book and Scott was making up for being denied the opportunity to make his version when he first wanted to. Enough is different for a remake to be worthwhile.

Reaction to viewing the 1987 version:
Spoiler:

The 1987 version is much shorter, but I STILL dozed off last night when watching it ... and it was during some of the violent scenes! "Wake me up when we get back to the character development." This is exasperating, inevitably falling asleep during movies that DO interest me. Anyway, without Spoilers I still find the ending slightly ambiguous and too restrained for my tastes. I needed a schmaltzy tearful scene in close-up and they played it distant and cool. This is the classic conflict of Hollywood vs. European movie styles, and *I* had thought that I came down on the side of the European. How embarrassing!
Studio politics in choosing directors:
Spoiler:

Since I was still obsessing over the supposed reason for the studio NOT wanting to work with the director of the successful "Top Gun", I figured it HAD to be a personal reason. I looked up the previous films by director Élie Chouraqui, and found THREE what were coproductions of 7 Films & France 3. There, simple answer: the bosses had worked with him before, so they knew and trusted him. Why WOULDN'T they want to work again with someone they like instead of a stranger? It makes sense to me.

Just in case anyone is interested in the German dub in 1080p:

I think I'll skip watching Dakota and Denzel again.
