[REL] Rock'n'Ball (2011) [Ukraine]

Post by DreamScape »   12 likes

Presenting the Russian-language Ukrainian film "Rock'n'Ball" with original English subtitles. This film ended up being quite the challenge, as it is a play with languages between Dima and Tymon who can't quite understand one another. And of course, myself, who can't understand either of them :D

The film is also both the first Russian and Polish film that I assisted in the translation of.

The subtitles were created thanks to help from a variety of people from a variety of places. The base subtitles were created from Whisper large v2 and v3 models, which were combined and edited by me.

Russian dialog was then reviewed and corrected by Chapaev from Karagarga and rezapp from TNT. Polish dialog was reviewed and corrected by endurro.

Thanks to everyone who helped out. This was a project that needed multiple reviewers for sure.

Additional comments

Tymon's name is spelled differently in the English credits at the end of the film. I had a conversation with endurro regarding this. We decided that the spelling in the credits neither matches the Polish spelling nor the name Dima calls him by in Russian ("Timon") and so went with the Polish spelling.

There is a scene where drunken Ukrainian musicians attempt to say something in Polish.
endurro wrote: Ukrainians try to pronounce a difficult sentence in Polish. Difficult for a Pole especially when drunk and impossible for a foreigner.

The sentence reads:
"W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie" "In Szczebrzeszyn the beetle sounds in the reeds".
The words are distorted.
The line is not translated in the subtitles but you just read the translation above :)

Expand for some technical discussion...
Spoiler:

I was not sure how to best handle the subtitles for the different languages spoken in the film. My solution wont satisfy any style guide, but it's what I landed on.

  • Russian dialog is styled normal.
  • Polish dialog spoken by Tymon is italicized.
  • When Dima or the Ukrainian musicians speak Polish, I included the Polish words instead of the translation.
  • English dialog is colored yellow.
  • Dialog that would normally be italicized like the radio broadcast is colored gray.
Sorry for being so complicated :) And apologies for any lines I messed up with my own rules.
Overall, it was an enjoyable film to work on.

Ten year old Russian boy Dima has no parents, he does not want sweets, he does not want a bike, and he does not want a dog. All he wants is to play soccer. And in this moment he wants to meet his father for at least one day. Fortune gives him an extraordinary chance. Dima finds the 'father'. This 'father' has no money and documents, he thinks about cigarettes, drinks, and constantly talks about some grandfather whom he wants to find. Father for a day, no problem. The problem is to reach mutual understanding, because... he's Polish and does not speak Russian.

WOW!

What a drop, DreamScape. Thank you, and a thank you to endurro, Chapaev and rezapp for their work and contributions.

It sounds like this was quite the project. I am downloading this right away. Curious, without any spoilers, what interested you about this movie totake on a project?

It must have been a lot of work to create the subtitles. So thanks to everyone who was involved.

And thanks DS for the movie.

Like pillowbaker said, "WOW!" The behind-the-scenes story of the epic translation project fascinates me so much that the movie itself is almost a bonus. (I know, I lose track of the end goal sometimes.) Thank you to everyone involved!!

I will ask first: DreamScape, by any chance do you have a Russian&Polish SRT you can share? Or was the English translation created from bits and scraps?

Unfortunately, that's not how it works, even more so for this film. This year, all the films I worked on I started by generated whisper subtitles in the same language as the film. However, I don't consistently make corrections to those files and instead focus on the English file.

Furthermore, whisper can sometimes have odd behavior with films that have multiple languages. Sometimes it "listened" to the Polish speech and translated into Russian accurately. And other times it would try to interpret the Polish as Russian and generate nonesense. It would take a bit of work to try and clean that up.

OK, that's fine - I had to ask. I thought maybe the fact that it switches back and forth between languages would be a problem. Thanks for the explanation!
