Setup aMule native under Mac OS

Post by Nasuada »   1 likes

For a long time I'm using eMule with Windows, running under Parallels. But running a virtual Machine consume RAM and processor capacity.
Since a few weeks I switched to aMule, who's a native Client for Mac OS X and it running well with the silicon processor architecture from Apple.
Most of the Settings are the same as under Windows, only the part around ed2k and KAD Server looks a bit different and taken some time to let it run successfully for me and I need a bit to work out, how I can download a linked ed2k File from here.
So if you are also a Mac OS user, this post can a small help for you how to using aMule. For more details around setting it up correctly, pls. use the eDonkey Setup Thread from here: viewtopic.php?t=7279

1. Download
You can get it from Sourceforge with this link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/amule/ ... p/download
This is Version 2.3.3 from 2022-06-10.

2. Install
Doubleclick the downloaded DMG File in your Downloads-Folder and simply Drag & Drop the aMule.app Icon to your Applications Folder or any other Place who you prefer.

3. First overview...
aMule_1.png
For the first look, the App looks near the same as under Windows. Only the part around setting up the connection to the donkey and KAD Network is a bit different and works a bit different in the setup as under Win. To connect to the servers, you need to hit the "Connect" Icon on the top Menu Icons.

4. Setup ED2K and KAD Server
Switching in the top Menu to the "Networks". You will see two tabs, one with ED2K and one with KAD. By deafult I got the eMule Security Server by default in the Server Name List, but if something goes wrong on your installation, you can use this URL for "Servers" at the left top Form.
http://upd.emule-security.org/server.met
After insert the URL, hit the tiny blue playbutton near the Form. Now you can connect any of the Servers who are on the list. To do that, simply doubleclick the refered server.
In the aMule Log tab you will now see all infos aorund the connection and if it's successfull. You also can see the connection status on the blue earth Icon who is at the same position as under Windows (bottom right). The bottom arrow (green, yellow or red) is the connection status. If it's green, all is fine.

For the KAD connection, copy this server Adress: http://download.tuxfamily.org/technosal ... /nodes.dat. Now switch to the "Kad" tab.
amule_kad.png
Fill the Adress in the "Nodes" Form and hit the small blue playbutton. Now you need to wait a bit. In the aMule Log you will see the Info "Connected to Kad (firewalled)" and after some seconds it will switch to "Connected to Kad (ok)". At this point you are also connected to the KAD Network. You also see the status on the Earth Icon on the bottom right on the top arrow who will changed his color to green.

5. Setup TCP & UDP Ports:
If you are using a Router (or see some yellow Arrows on your earth Icon), you need to open / route two ports. The Port setup of aMule you will find under the Preferences (Menubar of aMule) and than select "Connection". There you can setup the standard TCP and UDP Port. Some providers blocking the default TCP / UDP Port's, so it's recommended to change them for example to TCP: 16048 and UDP: 16068 (it's your free choice). UPnP can't be used on aMule under OS X.

Now you need to rout that Ports correctly on your Router. If you a FritzBox user and need some help with that, let me know over PM or in this thread. If you need the IP Adress of your Mac, you can us a simple Trick in the Menubar of OS X. Simply hold down the "Option" key on your Keyboard and click on the WLAN Symbol in the Menu Bar. Now you will see a lot of detailed information from the connected WLAN, including your IP Adress.

6. Try your connection of ED2K and Kad Servers. If all Arrows on the Earth Icon are green, you do a good job.

7. Start with the Download
If you hit the Text "Like this post to see ed2k links...", you will see one or more ed2k Links like a download of the movie in original language and a second with the subs (.srt File). Don't try to click on the direkct link to the ed2k Link, you need to check the box of the file who you would to download and than hit the Button "Copy selected links", who is directly under the regular link. Now you can switch to aMule and at the bottom of the App you will see a form called "ed2k Link:". Paste the Link and hit the button "commit". Don't using return, this will delete the link and nothing will happen.
Keep in mind: First make a check on the box of the ed2k Link, than hit the copy link button ;-)

That's it. Again, for any detailed setup, read the Thread around the Win Setup. If you have any questions, let me know.

THANK YOU so much, Nasuada! There have often been questions here about aMule, and I can not give any advice because I do not use Mac or Linux. This should be a big help. I made the topic a Sticky so that it stays up top.

I am seeing more how in some ways amule is different than emule. Thank you for keeping your tutorial up to date, Nasuada! There are emuling newbies who ask about it and it is good to have an experienced user explain the tricks of amule.

Went down a bit of a rabbit hole... Seems that aMule is unique in that it has explicit support for "Play while downloading": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compariso ... y_software

With the exception of one eMule mod that allows it (Osp): https://forum.emule-project.net/index.p ... pic=154502

Though, in my experience, you can actually sometimes play video files on ordinary eMule while downloading; just by dragging the incomplete files into the player, but it's a 'hit or miss' really.

MLDonkey sounds like an interesting client. Support for simultaneous muti-protocol downloads?

What do you mean? You can right-click on a downloading video file -> "Preview".

Although in eMule it did take me a LONG time to figure out that I needed to set Options/Files/Miscellaneous to "Try to download preview chunks first". Maybe the aMule "Play while downloading" feature is due only to strict sequential downloading by timecode; and when that is possible at high speeds. So it is not just a Preview and is more like streaming. If it does not "stream" (download) fast enough then it pauses until the next little bit downloads before it continues playback.
