If the book in its entirety would have been MORE controversial, it also sounds like the movie may have been careful to broadcast the filmmaker's views very clearly. They wanted to be sure and say "LOOK AT THIS!! It is very important!! It is a BAD thing this boyfriend did! We do NOT approve!" If they had just glossed over it without editorializing, I think you can guess what some of the public might say. "How dare you trivialize that!" European directors were also known for NOT hand-holding the audience, allowing them instead to come to their own conclusions. American (including Canada!) directors might WANT to do the same, but the public rules the roost. Mind you, I am just guessing here cuz I have not seen the movie. I am still looking forward to it, even while knowing the typical nature of 21st century North American cinema.

I merged the thread with the existing REL thread.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat???? Oops, we did it again. I had no idea, yet I remember both threads from BEFORE the merge because I posted repeatedly in both of them! Reading through the intermingled posts it is glaringly obvious that one thread was oblivious to the other. "Same movie? What are you talking about?"
