They called him/her "rumpnisse" (some sort of dwarf)

Edit: Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Mattis, and it's my unfortunate duty\~to inform you that we are robbers :D

If you would be so kind as to step out, please.Form a line and hand everything over! :D

I don't remember if it was so in 1984 movie

Rumpnissar at the end of Episode 4:

I think they did a very good job with the creatures, using CGI and puppetry and makeup. The Grådvärgar according to Astrid Lindgen were supposed to be the stuff of nightmares, but in the 1984 version they look to me like they used leftover Ewok costumes from "Return of the Jedi", not particularly scary even in the dark. I even found the anime version scarier! Here they are really creepy, when Ronja falls asleep in the woods and Mattis has to rescue her. Admittedly the dark does help.

What scared the shit out of me were the Vildvittrorna, but then I consider "The Birds" to be Hitchcock's most terrifying movie.

Mattis is courteous to his victims in the 1984 version, gallantly so with the ladies. The 2024 version really lays it on thick with his good robber humor, making him seem very much like a big hairy Robin Hood. I don't remember what it was like in the novel. Robin Hood was surely familiar to Astrid Lindgren and likely an inevitable influence, if only for her to subvert its depiction of robbers. Skalle-Per mocks Mattis for how rarely he takes from the rich and actually gives to the poor. (Once a decade.)

Well yeah the trend keeps going on btw LOL  - Next up is a new adaptaption "Life on Seacrow Island" (Swedish title: "Vi på Saltkråkan")
Life on Seacrow Island is a series about the children of two very different families; one from the rural archipelago and one from the bustling city. Their lives are intertwined on the island during a long and memorable summer. The story is seen mainly from the children’s perspective where their clear, unobtrusive gaze rules the world and leads to imaginative and dramatic adventures.

The new Life on Seacrow Island is an entertaining feelgood story about togetherness and the adventures of summer. It is a humor filled series, but with an existential depth that comes with portraying genuine human beings. The series is largely built from the original series by Astrid Lindgren with her timeless and universal themes, and which has been one of the most popular Swedish series of all time.
