Can you recommend any VPNs that support port forwarding for Android? I'm currently using ProtonVPN (premium - for their p2p servers), but they don't have port forwarding available in their Android app. From my research, it seems that AirVPN is the best option, but I'd like to be sure before I commit. I'm chasing that "highID" you know ;)

I know that AirVPN and Hide.me do support port forwarding, but I never used it on Android.

I don't know about using a VPN on Android. Both options ghost mentioned do NOT require a long and expensive commitment. AirVPN you can use for as short as one week for $2.16 (2 €). Hide.me shortest paid period is one month for $9.95 with a 30-day money back guarantee, but you can also use hide.me for FREE. I do not know what features are missing from the free version. (It is the next VPN I will try.) These are the only two VPNs I know of that still offer port forwarding.

Quick notes for future mobile users looking for ✨highID✨

This is tailored towards AirVPN, but the process is similar for other VPNs. One potential difference is that the VPN changes your active port number when you disconnect and reconnect (this is the case with ProtonVPN on desktop, I don't know if any mobile VPNs do this), so you'll need to change your listening port on Mule each time; AirVPN assigns you a static ports, so they'll be with you until your subscription with them ends - much more convenient.

1. You can open ports on airvpn.org/ports/ after paying for your plan, just go with the default settings for that. Don't remap 'AirPorts' to different local ports, otherwise the client will communicate to trackers (if you use them) and DHT the wrong port - the client will communicate to trackers and DHT the port number you have configured with it. As a result, you will get no incoming packets from the swarm :?

2. Before you do that, scroll to the bottom of that page: "Suggest a range of sequential free ports". Type in "4" for your number of ports needed. This is done because for the Mule your UDP port is set to your TCP port + 3 (e.g. if your TCP port is set to 30500, UDP port will be 30503). You can try look for something near 30000 using the graph. Open the ports in the given range.

3. Don't open the same ports on your router, there is no need to do so. Exposing the same ports you forward through AirVPN can actually open you up to correlation attacks.

4. Get the "Mule on Android & "Eddie - AirVPN" apps downloaded, they are both available on the Google Playstore as of writing. Don't turn the VPN lock on in the AirVPN app if you don't want to have to leave your phone unlocked while your downloads take place [only relevant if you are using the OpenVPN protocol].

5. Make sure not to tick the "Forward ports" box (i.e. Disable UPnP feature) in Settings > Other settings on the Mule app.

6. Modify your listening port in the Mule app. It's marked "Listen Port" on the main settings page. The default is 30000, you'll need to manually scroll to select another port (at least for me, that's why I suggested picking a range near 30000 earlier). Set it up to be the first open port in your range.

7. You should be all set ;) Check the sources info for whatever you want to download (you can see this option when you press the ed2k links on this board) and connect to the server with the most sources (long press the server in the app). The app should launch automatically and start the transfer once you press the link.

Note that you cannot upload/share from the app. Nor can you choose the directory where you save your files, only the storage device (internal or external), mine are saved to my downloads folder and I just move them to my 2TB SD card from there. It's also very important to note that if you choose to download directly to the SD card and then delete your Mule app, Android will delete your files (if you haven't moved them)!

My personal experience has been excellent on Android. I was actually able to reach 2.5 MB/s on one of my transfers so far :D
Spoiler:

I'm only seventeen, I apologise if my lack of experience has caused any incorrect information to be presented here - I have double checked everything that I've mentioned though, please let me know if anything is problematic.

Night please see @thecyanray‘s most recent post in here about android/HighID - I believe it deserves its own thread/post in the tutorial forum. Very informative / useful information for future users ..(and shouldn’t remain in this films thread)

It's a shame that I can't give back via eMule for the time being. I'm happy to upload for direct download though, does this board have any preferences in that regard?

As long a period of time as you have your emule client open for downloading, it will have the completed and partial files in your emule folders available for sharing. So you can give back that way. Officially, the board is eMule centered and that is what we encourage. But I am sure that some individuals here may have direct download preferences. I would suggest anything that does not require an account to get the good download speeds. So no rapidgator or nitroflare! Good sense dictates that it be something you can upload to with good speeds too. That you figure out as you try different options. Most sharing sites will require a login to upload files, but pick something that is free for you to use. As you browse FLM I am sure you will see a number of different sharing sites used. I have not used all of them so I can not even say how well they work for uploading. I am sure others CAN tell how well they work.
Spoiler:

Personally I use MEGA one 20Gb account at a time. When it is full I generate another disposable email address to register a new account and start filling it too. I never delete any of the files so in theory they stay available "forever" across a number of accounts. Note, MEGA wants people to pay for a single Premium account in order to get unlimited drive space.
