SubtitleEdit Google translation is broken

Post by Night457 »   0 likes

Does anyone know anything about this? It is suddenly only translating parts of subtitle lines, leaving the rest in the original language. Check out these translation results, a combination of English translation and the original Italian:
After ten days, all hope is lost,
vennero abbandonate le ricerche.
...
If I think I am the
only bearer of hope,
while all the others, dopo
l'incidente, sono rimasti senza.
...
The suitcases had opened,
i regali appesi ai rami,
as on the Christmas tree,
decorated, ma per una
notte di Natale triste,
for all the relatives of those
who never returned home.
If I plug the still-Italian lines into Google Translate in the browser, I get an English translation. I get the same bad combined results in both the previous version of SubtitleEdit and also the latest Update. The same thing happens whether I leave it on the default Line Merge or set it to "Translate each line separately" (my preference).

I routinely use the "Google Translate V1 API" to avoid all the versions demanding URL / API keys / Models -- as well as being subjected to AI Hallucinations. (It is exasperating when that kind of subtitle gets uploaded to opensubtitles.) Google Translate is hardly perfect but it is at least serviceable and fast. It is especially frustrating that there is already an English subtitle for this documentary, but it has proved impossible to sync to the video that I have unless I spend hours resyncing it line-by-line. The Italian subtitle I found already syncs properly and Italian translates clearly enough to English, and all I want to do is sit down and watch the documentary once and NOT spend hours perfecting subtitles. If I had tried this same project a month ago, the Italian would have translated completely.

Anyone have any idea what is wrong with Subtitle Edit (or how it accesses Google Translate)? More importantly, how to fix it? Believe it or not I have grown weary of spending hours on subtitles and I only want quick and easy solutions if someone has not already provided perfect subtitles in the first place.

Wow, for ONCE I have a problem with software doing weird things and I am NOT the only one! Sorry you have problems too of course. I will post if I come up with any solution other than using a different translator. (Of course there ARE many options of varying degrees of difficulty.)

In the case of THIS documentary, I found other seeded torrents that had synced proper English DVD subtitles already with the video of equivalent quality. Yet I know sooner or later I will want to translate something.

I didn't try it today, but if this happens the problem must be Google, not SubtitleEdit.

I really do not have a problem blaming Google for many, many things. But I considered the possibility that the problem is with how SE connets with GoogleTranslation: kind of like how FLM suddenly had a problem with ed2k links in Google Chrome being transferred to eMule some months ago. Surely whatever the exact problem is, it is because of some change that Google made because it happened while I was still using an older SE that had worked fine before. It may be that SubtitleEdit would have to update its software to work with whatever stupid change that Google made. With their continued push of various AI translators I do not see using old Google Translate properly to be a priority for them.

SubtitleEdit is only the GUI. The translation happens on the Google server. Maybe they have a bug at the moment.

With Google all changes are deliberate and they rarely admit to a bug. Because everything they do is for own good. They know better than we do. All Hail the Mighty Google! {sarcasm emoji}

Thank you for the great news! My life is now complete again: I stopped what I was doing and downloaded it right away.
