Oh, come on ;) ;) ! After setting Romeo+Julia in Venice Beach (because... well VENICE, duh! Great OT role of 16yo Claire Danes btw. Even my gf at the time recommended her to me) and King Lear in texas, i'm sure Zhivago could be transported to 1830s Venezuela or 1960s Nigeria or 1300s Laos, and be as effective, if only the writing was good. Not to mention the 3 (THREE!) murican versions of Les liaisons dangereuses, which I bet you didn't know was a fifties French movie ...?
Most of the actors are British.
because to Americans, British, sounds as much 'furriner' as they're able to stand ...?
Hollywood did its own "War and Peace" before Russia did its version (...) is so much better.
Didn't even know about that one. Why do you think it is SO much better? Maybe bcos it's directed by a Ukrainian :?: :?: :?:

If you continue a conversation a year later, there is no chance I will remember what I was talking about!

Your Shakespeare examples make a good point. The Japanese King Lear is one of my favorite movies.
If you strip Zhivago of the politics and history, then the love story could be adapted to a likely shorter film in a different setting. I may be an outlier among Zhivago fans in finding the romance part a bit dull!
I knew "Les liaisons dangereuses" was an 18th century French novel, and the 2 American versions that I have seen are still set in France, not Los Angeles or New York. I am guessing your third version is "Cruel Intentions"? That definitely has a different setting. I have also seen the 1950s movie.
