The story told in “A Dark Tale” was born a long time ago, in a story that tries to escape time, like other stories of the same genre. Past and present merge, intertwined with an ancient era, the one in which princes and princesses lived. In the present, however, we must face a harsh reality: neglected childhoods, disappointed expectations and dreams that will never come true. “A dark tale” takes place, apparently, in the present time. Everything is dark and oppressive from the beginning: in the middle of the night, a crowd surrounds the corpse of a young woman, lying in a pool of blood. As blood flows through space and time, “A Dark Tale” transforms into the story of a brother and sister, Mauro and Elena, who live in a violent and degraded reality. Their faceless mother represents the frightening monster whose shadow threatens the two children, especially Elena. The father, absent and helpless, is unable to change the situation and limits himself to witnessing the suffering of his children. The only positive figure is the grandmother, a storyteller from times gone by. Through her fairy tales, she gives children the most powerful weapon: hope. Then something happens: the father's desperation turns into a bloodbath. “A Dark Tale” changes again: it is the story of a prince and a princess, viscerally linked but divided by destiny, life and violence. The prince and princess will meet again and again, each time in different bodies. But with hope gone forever, their happy ending will have a completely new face.
