I turned to the A.I. to find out about the film and this was the result.
Options for finding the uncut version
Specialized streaming platforms:
Check sites like Mubi, FilmStruck (if still active in your region), or Kanopy, which often feature art-house or Scandinavian cinema. While Hud isn’t widely available, these platforms might include it in their rotating catalog.

Look into Nordic Film Classics or local Scandinavian services like Viaplay or SF Anytime, which sometimes carry classic Norwegian films.
Film archives and libraries:
Contact the Norsk Filminstitutt (Norwegian Film Institute) or the Nasjonalbiblioteket (National Library of Norway). They might have archived copies of the uncut version, especially if it was shown at festivals or on local TV. They sometimes grant access to researchers or dedicated enthusiasts.

In Denmark, the Det Danske Filminstitut (Danish Film Institute) could have information, given the cultural exchange between Norway and Denmark.
Second-hand market:
Search sites like eBay, AbeBooks, or Tradera (popular in Scandinavia) for physical copies on VHS or DVD of the original version. The 269-minute cut might have been distributed in older formats for TV or festivals.

Forums like Reddit (r/criterion or r/boutiquebluray) or DVDTalk could connect you with collectors who own the uncut version.
Online communities and torrents:
Explore private cinema trackers like Karagarga or Cin emageddon, which often host rare films. You’ll need an invitation and basic torrent knowledge, plus a check on legality in your country.

On YouTube or Vimeo, full versions of hard-to-find films sometimes appear, though quality varies. Use search terms like “Hud 1986 uncut” or “Hud 1986 full version Norwegian”.
Festivals or retrospectives:
Keep an eye on Scandinavian film festivals or retrospectives of Vibeke Løkkeberg’s work. Events like the Bergen International Film Festival or Kosmorama Trondheim International Film Festival might screen the uncut version for an anniversary or re-release.
Challenges and current status
As of March 31, 2025, there’s no clear evidence that the uncut version is available on mainstream streaming platforms (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.) or in modern digital releases. Sites like Reelgood and IMDb suggest even the standard 115-minute version isn’t widely accessible online.

The longer 269-minute version might be a Norwegian TV cut or a festival edit that never reached the general public. Some studies, like Tone Kristine Kolbjørnsen’s Living Pictures of Women (1992), mention explicit scenes cut from the commercial release, indicating the original is rawer and more extensive.
Practical recommendation
Start by contacting the Norsk Filminstitutt via email (post@nfi.no) to inquire about the uncut version’s availability for viewing or purchase. If that fails, explore private trackers or reach out to collectors on Scandinavian forums like Filmfront.no. If you find a copy, confirm it’s the 269-minute version by checking the runtime.
Would you like me to simulate a more specific search or help draft a message to the institute? Just let me know!

The original version was shown in 2011 at the Chateau Neuf cinema in Oslo. As mentioned in the link below, the original copy is at the Norwegian National Library.

Showing it at a film festival is different from a public release, as on DVD, bluray, or streaming. I doubt just anyone can borrow the original 35mm print from the Norwegian National Library. Not that I'd be able to do anything with the film reels even if I had a card for that particular library and they were willing to send them to me.

The original series seems to be lost forever. :(

But I made a crisp, sharp 4K version from the Blu-ray.

Perfectly denoised, cleaned from dust and scratches and re-grained:
