Free VPN to use with Jdownloader2?

Post by citronleaf »   2 likes

Can anyone recommend a free VPN to change the IP address with free software downloaders like Jdownloader2 or yt-dlp?

I have used free browser VPNs, but they do not change the IP address for the whole computer and for the downloaders I use and rely on. The browser VPNs are great for opening up region-restricted sites to watch streaming content. I just can not download the videos. I have used free browser downloaders, but they are limited and not very good. Some will download in SD for free but HD downloading is Premium. I have successfully used the free UrbanVPN extension in the browser, but the installed computer software version has never worked for me.

It is only occasionally that I need to change my IP-address for a download, so I do not think it worth the cost of either a Premium VPN or a Premium downloader. I am certainly willing to try different downloaders too, as long as they are still free. Maybe I am super-dense and I have been using the software wrong. I just figure that surely someone out there uses totally free resources for downloading region-restricted videos .... ?

Thank you for any suggestions!

Just remember: free means YOU are the product. Free VPNs make their money by collecting your data and advertising. I do recommend finding a paid VPN service.

That is good to keep in mind and I do realize that, which is why I am so far behind the times even knowing anything about VPNs. For many years I have kept away from many such things out of distrust and suspicion. But I am still online and not an islolated survivalist living off the grid. (Yet.) After many years I used a paid VPN but I can no longer justify spending the money. I do not believe that the paid services somehow refrain from collecting data: they get my cash and my data too! None of them can be trusted. For the few times I want to download region-restricted content, I can put up with the advertising. They can have my uninteresting data too.

I only can think of UrbanVPN. It's free, but like DreamScape said...

I strongly disagree. Providers like Mullvad even closely work together with the tør Browser/project and created a Full Privacy focused web browser (Mullvad-Browser).

Other trustworthy would be AirVPN that has been in the business for many years and is European.

You really can’t compare these shady (free) providers with paid trustworthy ones.

Traditional commercial television relies on advertising for its revenue. Does that therefore make it "shady"? If a business charges money for its services does it therefore mean that it is "trustworthy"? Would not selling data it acquires simply be another means of earning revenue? So why wouldn't they do that too? Are people who charge money somehow more moral than those who do not?

I never tried Mullvad but it had a good reputation like AirVPN, which I did not have any problems with. But quite frankly I am not qualified to judge whether or not AirVPN was spying on me and selling my data. Just because they CLAIM they would not do such a thing does not make it so. They could... lie about it.

The only paid software I use now is Windows, and everything else is FREE. Including eMule, which does not even have advertising. Why should I believe that open-source free software designers operate out of the goodness of their hearts? That their only motivation is creating useful tools that they can share with others? I have read endless reassurances that open source code can be analyzed for vulnerabities, but why should I trust the honesty and reliability of those who have the ability to do so? Many are precisely the Tech Bros who have been ramming Artificial Intelligence full throttle down our throats. It would be foolish to automatically assume that what they choose to do is "for our own good". (I do not trust doctors either.) And how often have I read sites that might have online discussions about what free software I use is actually malware? Answer: NEVER. I do not have the interest and do not have the time. Someone could very well be reporting that it is spyware and I would never know. As long as it performs the functions I require of it, I keep using it. The Whitehats can identify software vulnerabilites, but that software will still be available online with shill reviews lying about how wonderful it is. Yes, I might even be more distrustful and suspicious than citronleaf. :P I am pragmatic in that I use software that I do not necessarily trust, because my alternate choice is using nothing at all.

If citronleaf or anyone else wants to accept the risk of using free software or paid software that is their choice. I have to agree with citronleaf that it is naive to assume that paid software is somehow automatically safe. I don't believe it.

Sorry, citronleaf, I do not know any free VPNs to suggest. ;)

You are not the only one, I also do not trust doctors at all, in Italy we often hear of doctors investigated, arrested, punished for long waits or even doctors who make patients pay money in exchange for sexual services.

You could try VPNBook too.
For downloading streamed content, you may use streamlink (command-line tool). It can even ignore region restrictions when the region is only checked in browsers. Other than downloading, it supports opening the stream in VLC, too.

Thank you very much, that looks like what I want! I will check it out.

(With sensible caution, of course. :D )
