I download through emule and it takes me over half a day
Emule is p2p. Itr always depends on the sourrces you are downloading from and how much upload speed they give.
If you have enough sourrces eMule can be super fast and download a movie in about 10 minutes. It always depends.

I really have never understood what the motivation it is of pixeldrain and other uploaders to provide their services, because their powerful storage servers and internet connection COSTS MONEY. What exactly do they get out of me? I suspect they are up to something malicious, but my paranoia is too exhausting to maintain for long.

Anyway, their hardware and internet account for the swift download speeds. Compare that to how much time it takes to UPLOAD a file TO pixeldrain. That depends on the individual person's home internet connection, and THAT is the limit on how fast an emule connection will be. Uploading to pixeldrain takes enough time for me now and would have been far too long and impossible on my previous internet service, which had speeds typical for the era in which emule originated. Now some people have available and pay for super-fast internet but I think most do not. Emule will be slower when there is one "normal" home computer source.

(This is a far wordier version of what ghost said... :? )

Of course this depends in the upload speed your ISP gives you. Do you know it? I have 200 Mbit/s.

you can find out your upload speed by doing one of those online internet speed tests right?

As the Fonz would say, "Exactamundo!" to you both. ;)

Whatever an ISP claims for upload speeds is a lie, and it will always be slower than the download speeds. Online speed tests indicate the current speed but that speed can vary throughout a day and from day to day. I suppose a coder could set their computer to do routine speed tests in the background and create a graph showing their speeds through time. Or maybe there is software out there that already does that...

P.S.: Let me just say that right now my DOWNLOAD speeds are better than your UPLOAD speeds, ghost. I really do not want to say how low my upload speeds are, which are still much faster than they were a few years ago.

It is a good thing you got the ports opened because that will make your emule work better. It is kind of the whole point of getting emule installed in its ideal condition. Have you tried downloading anything with it yet?

Is it safe? It is as safe as being on the Internet downloading things normally is. Emule downloading is fairly safe. If you download hacked software, it might have spyware built in to it. So do not do that. Do not download .exe files and run them because you have no idea where they came from. Likewise, people should not take the risk of downloading illegal child porn. Using a VPN while downloading anything can LOWER a person's risk of detection by making them more anonymous, but it does not eliminate risk entirely. Some of us are downloading pirated copyrighted movies. (I know! Shock! Horror!) Entertainment industry lawyers tend to frown on that.

In a sense NOTHING is safe online. You can cancel your internet service and your computer will be much safer that way. Unplug it, and it is even safer because you avoid electrical spikes. But you will not get much done with the computer that way.
