This looks like quite the interesting and rare movie. I didn't get more than two sentences into the description before quickly averting my eyes and looking for a download option. Many thanks for the VHS rip that is still being shared to this day, ghost.

Can anyone tell me exactly what happened at the end of this movie?

Spoiler: After locking the boy in that tower, the girl ran and opened it. Then some slightly romantic things happened between them. But at the end of the movie, when he returned to the boy's house, he found it empty. She went to the place where they met with the chair and sat down. Someone came. She hugged him and ran towards the tower. İşte o kimdi? Was that person the grown-up version of the child?

The final scene wasn't clear at all. The final scene was not clearly visible.

Spoiler: Ever since last summer, the twelve-year-old Anna has been waiting for Pejter -- waiting and waiting for a whole year, she tells us in inner monologue. But when the curling-haired Pejter arrives with the boat to stay with Dad a week (mom has a vacation), Anna almost dares not to speak to him. She follows him from a distance, when with a heavy bag he walks the way to Dad. He's the one who starts talking to her. He gives her a gem that she seemingly reluctantly receives. Anna has come home. She cries in secret and is angry with herself. The anger goes out on the family. The worst hits little brother who marvels that she is angry all the time. Over him, she pours a tub of water. Anna is on the beach at dusk. She sees a couple of teenagers approaching, Mariette and a guy with cassette players. Mariette shows his breasts and tells him that the guy with the curl has come back. They discover that they are watched by Anna who to protect herself gives Mariette the pearl. When Anna tells me that she got it from Pejter, Marietta throws it out into the water. What do you usually do? asks Mariette, pull down your pants? You're too small for that," Mariette said. The guy with the curl will have to regret it. Anna runs away weepy. The teenagers are laughing. The next day Anna looks for Pejter. You have to be careful to run after me," she said. I don't either," he said. But he follows her and wants them to make something up. She smiles contentedly, when he can't see her face. A moment later, she sees Mariette and the cassette guy. She asks Pejter to run home, and they divorce. Anna and Pejter are seen again. It's dangerous for him to be away from home, she warns, but he doesn't want to listen to advice. Instead, she brings him home. There's a lot of good food, she says, and no one else is home. At Hanna's house, the fridge is empty, and Pejter feels cheated. Instead, she tries to interest him for undressing. She holds the edge of the faith, ready to pull down, but he turns out completely cold. He gets a glass of milk and says there wasn't much to come for. She gets angry, and he goes. She relents and tries to call him back from the window. No! No! He replies. You'll never see me again! She's screaming. Anna comes home to Pejter. She has found a hiding place for him, she tells me -- an old tower. With lid and pock, she gets him there. To get in, she smashes a padlock with a stone. A week is so short, just seven days, says Anna inside the tower. There should be an eighth day, when you get to do anything," Pejter said. Pejter stays when Anna leaves the tower to go home and eat. She closes the gate and hooks on the padlock. Anna has to stay home to babysit little brother. Only next morning will she return to the tower, where she finds Pejter crawled and hulking. Remorseful, she talks on. He doesn't say anything, before he leaves. Anna has sought solitude out in a flower meadow. Suddenly she hears music and sees Mariette and the cassette man walking from one direction and Pejter from another. The pedestrians meet. You're gonna give a fuck in little girls, the guy says, and then pull your pants down on Pejter. Harpit! The guy said. Mosquito brow! Mariette said. Then the teenagers go. Pejter pulls up his pants. At least it doesn't matter," Pejter told Anna afterwards. Tell me it doesn't matter! He hands hands, and she takes it. Then she drops it and rushes away. Anna is home. The face reflects the heartache. She's coming home to Pejter who's packing. When he knocks the bag to the boat, she tries to stop him, and finally she can say it cleanly: I want you to stay. I guess I'll stay," Pejter said. The rest of the day elapses under happy consensus, and the next morning Anna wakes up with joy in her heart. She goes into the toilet, pulls down the panties and looks between her legs. What a lot of hair! She says. Too bad no one gets to see them. She's coming home to Pejter. It's not so bad not to wear his pants," she said. It's just fun to be without. I have to go tonight," He said. Mom called. Anna gets a whim and runs out. Pejter manages to almost chase to catch up and say hello before she rushes on. When she comes back to his house, he's gone. The sun goes down over the beach. There's Anna. A grown woman comes up to her and says, “You are a typical savage”. Who are you? Anna asks. Anna, the woman answers and gives young Anna a pat and a hug. Yes, young Anna says. Then they are separated.

The disappearance of her friend could simply mean he wasn't allowed to stay despite his own promise. He only spends one week a year with his father on the island. This too is unclear. Why was the house so empty? Could it be the boy himself was never real?

If anyone has more insight please share. This film hasn't inspired a whole lot of discussion on movie boards or anything like that.

I wonder if it was too late after Anna locked the child up? Because...

Spoiler: After the boy was locked in the tower, the girl could not leave the house. Then she forgot and remembered after a while. She quickly ran and unlocked the door. At that moment, it was as if there was no one in the tower. Could Anna have imagined that time? The most important question is this. What happened to the child? What actually happened to the characters in the final scene?

I'm very curious.

The film is based on two books by Rose Lagercrantz: Tröst åt Pejter (1974) and Räddarinnan (1976) (republished together in 1990 under the film's title). Reading them would certainly be helpful to understand the film's ending, but unfortunately I don't believe they're available in digital format. They are available in paperback from several online bookstores or from Google Books.
