I'll see if I can save Night an upload, because it is still at blizzardkid. The pixeldrain link that was posted there is now dead, but the cloud.mail.ru links are live. 4 RARs, downloading fairly fast for me. [Code] (7.25 GB version as posted by Night457. Blizzardkid is a great free site, and recommended if their registration is currently open to outsiders and you are comfortable webpage-translating the Russian.)

Thank you citronleaf! The pixeldrain link I had posted was probably taken directly from blizzardkid.citronleaf wrote: Tue Sep 09, 2025 8:17 pm I'll see if I can save Night an upload, because it is still at blizzardkid. This German-made film "was filmed in northeastern South Africa, just beyond the border with and in Eswatini itself. Because of the African actors, the film was shot in English." [Wikipedia] The German track was very well synced because the Germans are great dubbers, but the English track is the original. (The blizzardkid file has Engish, German, Russian.) I have never found any subtitles for this movie, only more dubs.Moonee wrote: Tue Sep 09, 2025 7:07 pm (I'm mainly looking for a version in its original language with Eng subtitles)

No, it's not the sunlight. I always had the feeling that it had some sort of filter applied to it, or that its grain exacerbated that hazy as well. You can clearly see how some of the shots look like those taken on a cell phone a decade ago.Night457 wrote: Wed Sep 10, 2025 12:14 am

I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as original language in this movie, they just use different languages in different shots.
For example, the girl speaks German most of the time, while the African boy and casts speak English, and the girl's grandmother speaks both languages.
You can even see in some scenes where the girl is using German and the boy is using English, and I'm guessing neither of them understands what the other is saying, they're just reading the lines.

A yellow filter maybe? Do my screenshots look the same as you remember? (My eyes are old so everything looks yellow.)Sue04 wrote: Wed Sep 10, 2025 12:34 am I always had the feeling that it had some sort of filter applied to it, or that its grain exacerbated that as well.
This sounds very likely. I think you are right -- and I don't have to check the video to be sure. It makes sense, and also explains why I thought "Wow that German dub is SO well synced!"I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as original language in this movie, they just use different languages in different shots.
P.S.: If anyone finds subtitles in any language they are invited to post them.
Re: [REL] Thabo - Das Nashornabenteuer / Thabo And The Rhino Case (2023)
I don't know, maybe it's the shooting equipment, maybe it's the post filters, maybe it's just the DIT related issues.Night457 wrote: Wed Sep 10, 2025 12:40 am A yellow filter maybe? Do my screenshots look the same as you remember? (My eyes are old so everything looks yellow.)
And yes, your screenshots is just as I remembered it, you could see that some of the shots are blurry. It doesn't feel like a movie made in 2023, more like 20 years ago.
Re: [REL] Thabo - Das Nashornabenteuer / Thabo And The Rhino Case (2023)
What is DIT? (In this context.) Digital somethingorother?
You mean the early digital era, with directors losing all restraint with the new digital color grading as in Soderbergh's "Traffic" (2000) or Ridley Scott's ""Black Hawk Down" (2001)? (I deliberately chose realistic movies as examples to make the color choices more obvious, as opposed to pure fantasy movies of the era.)It doesn't feel like a movie made in 2023, more like 20 years ago.
A movie like 40 or 50 years ago would be better.
Re: [REL] Thabo - Das Nashornabenteuer / Thabo And The Rhino Case (2023)
DIT (Digital Imaging Technician), it often appears in the end credits of movies doesn't it?
I'm not referring to a particular era or style, it's just a metaphor to describe the fact that it doesn't present modern cinematic levels of image quality. It's like you're using an 8K camera but only producing a 720p image quality, just a metaphor.
I'm not sure if I really prefer old movies, but if you're referring to some style and way of doing it, I think I'd understand and agree with it. Overall, I definitely prefer the advances in image quality that modern technology has brought.A movie like 40 or 50 years ago would be better.
But I do like the narratives of some old movies more and people's commitment to a good story. But I can't say all old movies, cause I've seen a lot of bad old movies too. There are serious people in any era, as well as those mixed bag of scum.
Re: [REL] Thabo - Das Nashornabenteuer / Thabo And The Rhino Case (2023)
At least I managed to intuit the general direction of your post, without knowing that particular job.
I finally stopped dutifully reading end credits when they exceeded 10 minutes in length.it often appears in the end credits of movies doesn't it?
Ok, I get you now. I was thinking of cases where a filmmaker deliberately chooses a style that could be interpreted as "bad" or at least annoying: with digital footage made excessively grainy, imitating camera shutter flashing or lens flares, or given odd colors.I'm not referring to a particular era or style, it's just a metaphor to describe the fact that it doesn't present modern cinematic levels of image quality.
My general preference for old movies is not really for technical reasons, although I readily reject "bad" digital in favor of film, whether the bad digital is a stylistic choice or due to incompletence. When done right I have no problem with digital "film". I really do not want the camera or the recording medium to call attention to itself.
Mostly I like old movies for narrative/story/character reasons. I have seen enough old movies to confirm that you are absolutely right and that there is no justice in putting a blanket nostalgic glow on their memory, because huge numbers of them are pure crap. That is one thing we can rely upon in all eras!
But I would rather watch a great old movie with a great story on videotape than a 4KUHD of a modern movie that leaves me cold. Fortunately, most of my old favorites have been getting modern restorations so that I at least do not have to watch VHS!

Yep, you have guessed what it means!Night457 wrote: Wed Sep 10, 2025 2:17 am At least I managed to intuit the general direction of your post, without knowing that particular job.
I don't read the end credits closely either, but sometimes I do look at them, and sometimes I could pick up some interesting information.
Yes, I hate those over-the-top attention-grabbing practices, that make things worse, not better. If some skills aren’t applied with the right touch, they risk feeling excessive and gimmicky, which can distract more than enhance. And I would be very tired of them doing it if that was the case.I was thinking of cases where a filmmaker deliberately chooses a style that could be interpreted as "bad" or at least annoying: with digital footage made excessively grainy, imitating camera shutter flashing or lens flares, or given odd colors.
Precisely. They serve the image and the story rather than proclaiming a military embodiment of superiority. To use a poor analogy, even if you were to use a very high-end and expensive equipment to filming poop, it still wouldn't become appetizing or look palatable.I really do not want the camera or the recording medium to call attention to itself.
It's true, there's always no shortage of scumbags with excellent equipment and superb resources, but will never be able to produce work that has a warmth to it. I understand what you're saying, and I hate those just as much, they waste everything. Yes, those restored old movies are great, and people shouldn't prefer watch old movies cause they have no choice...than a 4KUHD of a modern movie that leaves me cold
