Guest, English subtitles are available and included in the MKV as a subtitle track in SRT format.
I just mentioned "separate" because of the one screenshot with a subtitle so you don't think it has burned in subtitles.

idler, I will try to find a TV recording. Hopefully just the DVD has a problem and not the movie.

I've upscaled the 480p Russian / German DVD (odd it's 480p and 29.97fps) to a 720p 23.97fps encode. 5.1 audio - embedded english subtitles. 3.3gb. I've dropped the bad Russian overdub track and keeping what looks like the original Ukraine audio track - which is 5.1 - i could have down converted it to stereo to save 150mb of size - but probably won't bother. I watched it the other night. Some of it is quite sad. But such a great film. Boy has a bigger part in it than the girl - but the acting is excellent. Anyone interested? Can post in a few days.
