Yeah, 4k and 8k refer to approx horizontal resolution while 1080p and others before that referred to the vertical height. A film that was 1920x 820ish (2.35:1) would still be referred to as 1080p. If encoded with the black bars it would be 1920x1080p without the black bars 1920x820ish. But still the width of the 1080p video is 1920 - so still high def. Maybe this is why they switched to the horizontal width for 4k and 8k.Night457 wrote: Tue Dec 09, 2025 3:24 am This is how I understand it -
16:9 modern TV displays:
2160p UHD Ultra High Definition (4K)
1440p QHD Quad High Definition
1080p FHD Full High Definition
720p HD High Definition
4:3 old TV displays:
576p SD Standard Definiton (PAL version)
480p SD Standard Defintion (NTSC version)
Of course the transition from boxy to wide TVs made things confusing.
The numbers calculated and shown by software don't always match the standards that were created to fit the equipment that the videos were displayed on.

This is stretching my mind! What about a 4:3 video in 4K, like the UHD of "Wizard of Oz"? It has a narrower image because it is not widescreen. Is it not considered 4k by the horizontal width rule? Or is that yet another case where they include the black bars, just this time at the sides instead of the top and bottom? That does not solve any specfication problems, it just rotates them 90 degrees.

If you have a 16:9 screen, what resolution of screen would you need to fit the entire video 1:1? That's how to work out the resolution of a given video.citronleaf wrote: Tue Dec 09, 2025 7:20 pm This is stretching my mind! What about a 4:3 video in 4K, like the UHD of "Wizard of Oz"? I've just prepared a post with regards to yt-dlp: viewtopic.php?t=18227Moonee wrote: Mon Dec 08, 2025 2:24 pm Yeah well
I have never used a command line tool and to be honest, I don't even know how it works
I'll probably try learning eventually
You may want to look into Stacher7, which is a GUI for yt-dlp and ffmpeg: https://stacher.io/
