So absolutely true

Vimeo in my opinion is something of a necessity if you like/want to watch short films

This is massive BS brought about by some people supposedly looking to protect children from hardcore internet porn. Of course that is still readily available and was never on Vimeo or YouTube in the first place! I certainly am not going to give my Government ID to any video streaming site, and my credit card is only for places that I buy things from. (And I don't purchase Vimeo rentals.) The "Age estimation selfie" is ridiculous. A 12-year-old with a smart phone can still get an "Age-Verified" account just by taking a picture of someone older. A clever tween could create AI-generated selfies and see if that fools them. The only thing this nonsense accomplishes is invading the privacy of adults.
Vimeo has partnered with Persona, a trusted third-party verification service, to securely confirm viewer age. Persona handles the verification process, and Vimeo does not store raw ID images or sensitive details.
Trusted by WHOM??? Several times a year I read news about health insurance companies and banks having member information stolen. You know, places where keeping information private is actually IMPORTANT. We can somehow trust this Persona?
Age verification is required for users located in the following regions:

United Kingdom
European Union

This list will expand as additional regions adopt age verification requirements.
The only thing that protects me for the moment is the incompetence of my country's politicians. I won't say more than that.

There was a story (on arstechnica I think) about kids using a character in a video game to get past the selfie age checks.

The double standard is that they protect children, but in reality, that content (not illegal) generates millions of views and dollars. It's only when swimwear or dancewear brands have to post photos of models that it generates the most views; it's their golden goose. That's when Instagram tries to 'control' their content.
