I'm interested! Where is the Ukrainian audio from? Was it misidentified as German? Or is the "German" a mix of Ukrainian and German? Please do not omit the 5.1 audio, as 150 mb is hardly a significant savings. If it were a huge DTS-HDMA 5.1 it would be worth it to recode to smaller ac3.

I'm not sure the language. I doubt it's all German as the children are from the Ukraine and wouldn't be speaking German natively. There's some subtitles missing in the subtitles I found online, when someone is translating - I think to German, or was it Ukranian? I'll upload in a bit - need to check the aspect ratio is correct.

Great, I look forward to it!

I will not pretend I can recognize Ukrainian by ear, but I can usually recognize "not German". Of course recently I was caught out failing to notice that ITALIAN was "NOT Russian" and my goodness those two languages are completely different. So I can be fooled if I am not paying attention.

my 720p upscale, English subs, 5.1 audio - 3.2gb split across 4 7zip
[File]
The DVD was only 480p - so pushing it beyond 50% upscale seemed too much - and it looks fine.

Thanks for the upscale, and for keeping the 5.1 audio! :) I randomly listened to parts because I have your file in front of me and there is definitely a lot of German. There is also a good portion that I do not recognize as German so I guess that must be the Ukrainian. The young boy seems to jump back and forth in the languages and I think also the grizzle-faced guy.

I fixed the aspect ratio as the previous looked a bit off - characters a bit too thin. Was 1.75:1, should have been about 1.87:1. Sometimes you can use a clock on the wall, a wheel of some sort to check that the horizontal-vertical is correct. On this there wasn't anything. Also added the trailer and short director interview:

Thanks, David.

1.87:1 is a weird AR. You sure it isn't 1.85:1?

1.75 is also weird. Maybe it was

1.75 - a sliver of hardcoded black bars on top+bottom = 1.78 actual image, and
1.87 - a sliver of hardcoded black bars on the sides = 1.85 actual image ?

I gotta look at this and the original, but I am not going to measure it. Thanks for the fix, David!

Anyway 1.87 and 1.85 isn't a big difference. I don't think you will notice.

I checked another version that someone else released and it was 704x368 = 1.91:1. See screenshot.
The version I released originally was accounting for the cropping on the left and right but not for the fact that DVD pixels are about 4:3 shape and screen pixels are 1:1 - so it made the release about 1.73:1 - seemed close to 1.78:1 which I knew as a standard film size. But I had a feeling that people looked a bit thin. This first encode was 1264x720 - slight black bars at the side on a 16:9 TV.
So I then force re-encoded it to 1280x696 which was a multiple of 4 and is a ratio of 1.84:1. This seems right now. Tiny black bars top and bottom and more consistent with other release.
