By Yann I assume you mean a tomboy - not familiar with that term myself. Teenagers often do change their hairstyle and dress though. Some multiple times.
You can tell Katty is a girl in the first film. It's not like the movie Tomboy (2011), where if it wasn't for the title giving you a big hint you might not realize the lead character wasn't actually a boy (until the bath scene).
When Eric first meets Marie, she goes to school as Yann, a boy's name. She is only revealed to be a girl when they fall into the ocean. Marie's aunt is also criticized for letting her go to school as a boy. Marie continues to be uncomfortable in a dress throughout the movie.
All of this is just dropped in the second film.
Believe it or not, I watched both films without subtitles as they weren't available at the time. I had to order the disc because all the online posts I could find had the same sets of expired links. So I got the gist of what was happening but missed a lot of details (including that one). I should probably watch them with the subs. Maybe I will this weekend, since I liked them so much even without knowing what was being said.
The subtitles for La Traversée du phare seemed to be pretty good, I even muxed them in before posting the DVD. Available subs for Les inséparables are ... well, better than nothing is the phrase that comes to mind. They look to have been compiled using voice recognition and AI. Unless someone has found better ones - please let us know if you've got a human corrected set.
