AI upscale to 1080p using Starlight Mini. English audio:
Nice. Thank you!

Somehow I had in mind, that I used SL for this short before, but it seems I didn't.

BTW: Do you upscale with Starlight directly to 1080p? This must take forever.

Unfortunately, the Starlight Mini model doesn't offer much in terms of flexibility when it comes to resolution: just a base resolution and then 2x, 4x etc. upscales. So I've found the most effective method is to upscale to the base resolution using Starlight Mini then upscale to the desired resolution (1080p usually) using Proteus.

My Christmas present to myself this year was a new PC, which now makes Starlight upscales viable. In this instance, it took 8 hours for the Starlight processing, then a further 22 minutes for the Proteus upscale. On my old PC, using the Starlight Mini model would have taken days!

Yeah, that's the way I do it too. Using Starlight with the default resolution (mostly around 720p) and then do a second pass to 1080p.

Congrats to your new PC. ;) Does it have a RTX 5XXX?
I only can use Topaz with my RTX 4090 Laptop GPU, but it's pretty fast.

Yes, it's very fast like RTX 4070 Super desktop gpu. Are there any settings you would recommend for upscaling dvd using Proteus model to achieve best quality possible? I have RTX 5090 desktop, so performance shouldn't be an issue.

Hi and welcome to FLM (what a username!).

Every source footage is different. Normally I'm fine with the default/auto settings of the Proteus model. But it always depends on the quality of the source. You have to try different settings. There are no "best settings".

Very true. The Starlight models are really only of benefit with source material of very low quality and/or low resolution (sub-480px). If I'm using an original home media release (DVD, Blu-ray etc.) I always use Proteus. If I'm using a decent-quality rip of some kind, I judge it on a case-by-case basis, but I usually resort to either Proteus or Iris.
