Note: when I tried to simply recontainer it using MKVToolNix like I normally do, it produced a file a tenth the size and played no video. (Strangest failure I have ever seen!) Since I don't watch TS files, I recoded it. Then it worked fine for me. (Thank you deadman for your source file!)

I did it twice to be sure I did not check the wrong boxes or click the wrong button! Bewildering. But I recode videos every day now so fixing it was not difficult.

That's why I left it in .ts format. I would've preferred remuxing into an .mkv but I got the same result as Night. Nothing I did seemed to work. Sometimes if you use tsMuxer to demux each track into separate files first, you can then successfully use MKVToolNix to combine them into a working .mkv. Not this time. If you managed to fix it, what did you do?

I downloaded the ts file and tried for myself.

First of all: I can play the video with displayed subtitles in VLC without any problem.

MKVToolNix gave me a 495 MB file. XMediaRecode and Avidemux couldn't open the ts at all. I don't know why. Maybe it's the dts audio?

EDIT:
No, it isn't the audio stream.

This is what Mediainfo gave me with the file MKVToolNix has created:

Note, I think that I did not have any problems playing the TS and with subtitles in MPC. That is just not my preference.

I got the same MKVToolNix results that ghost posted.

Well if both ghost and deadman are saying "WTF" then at least I do not have to feel like an idiot, or that the file was just picking on ME. But it is strange that ghost's VLC played it with the subtitles! I don't know how that happened, maybe ghost has a custom-hacked copy of VLC. (Or VLC just updated and fixed the bug in the past few days.) I used XMediaRecode to recode it and with no issues; the results are a 6000 kb/s video in MKV and the DTS recoded to AC3. Then I used MKVToolNix for an optional default embed of the subtitles.

I can play the .ts file with Potplayer fine. Cuting out smaller parts with MKVToolNix ended up with error message. Avidemux opened it and I could save smaller parts without problems.

I just downloaded deadman's file again to experiment with it but NOT the SRT, and found that the TS has embedded/optional English PGS subtitles. These are not external text subtitles, so they play just fine in VLC. {facepalm}

Ah right, I think image subtitles work. I was too quick to look too closely.
