See, I do need to learn some Korean. The names anyway! I'm wondering if this is like the 19th century Russian novels where every character has at least three variations on their given name, and they are non-obvious to anyone who does not already know Russian names. "Yoori" could be a nickname like "honeybunch" or "little one". Or there are soundalike names that the Korean-generator misheard.

Yeah, that's very likely and I thought the same. But IMDB even lists 2 different actresses. And that confused me.

Watched it and liked it, thank you for the subtitles. This may be the first time in a few years where I remained raptly intent on a full-length movie without any interruptions. (No snacks, no remote control pausing, no napping.) Admittedly part of it was my trying to figure out some things about the plot and personal relationships. I at least figured out some of the name confusion after I was done watching.

The 7-year-old stonefaced girl IS variously addressed as either Seonyul or Yuri, which does seem strange.

(Let us not get into the variations on transliteration to English.)

Kim Hyunjeong plays "Han Yuri", the adoptive mother of the little girl "Seonyul"/"Yuri".

My guess is that the character's given name is Seonyul but that they call her "Yuri" after her adoptive mother so that she is more clearly part of her new family. It is like calling her "Yuri Junior".

Spoiler: But in the case of THIS particular creepy family, it is more like animals scent-marking their territory. All the adults in the movie are just bizarre fake and inhuman. Unfortunately it starts to affect Suyeon, as she begins to treat little Seonyul as badly as the adults treat her. Suyeon's classmate Gayeong (aka Gayoung) is correctly called a "fucking bitch" but she clearly gets it from HER mother, who seems determined to drive Suyeon out of the house while pretending to want to help her. 7-year-old Seonyul's adoptive family turns out to be even worse, adopting her only so they can have content for their online videos and can appear to be "Good People". The mother breaks down crying on camera when she realizes she needs to pretend to appear sympathetic to the story of Suyeon's difficult past. The father is a disgusting greasy creep with an oily sheen running down his face from his perpetually juiced-up mullet. He looks like he should be playacting the role of a gangster instead of playacting a decent human being.

The 1080p WEB-DL had a very bright white line at the bottom edge, which I found intolerable when I tried to watch it on a large screen. So I recoded it while cropping the bottom ten pixels. (So it is 1920x1070.) If anyone needs it, here is my version: [Code]

It is like calling her "Yuri Junior".

I didn't get, that "Yuri" was the adoptive mother's name. But that "Yuri junior" interpretation would make sense.

First I wrote the names like "Su-yean", "Yoo-ri"... like on IMDB. Then I saw in the credits of the film that they wrote it without the hyphen.
So I changed it to Suyeaon etc. Maybe I should change Yoori to Yuri (now that I saw this name in the credits).

Do you suggest any other changes in the subtitles?

I also noticed that small white line at the bottom of the picture. I guess that comes from capturing the movie (It's not a WEB-DL. You can see the motion stucks a little from time to time). Thanks for fixing it.

There are multiple "correct" ways to anglicize Korean names (see my korean-name.com links) and they are not even consistent in the credits either (Gayeong/Gayoung). Personally I think that being consistent within the subtitle itself is what is important, whatever the chosen version.

(I am not going to try and distinguish if there is an actual Korean difference in pronunciation between "Han Yoori" (Han Yuri) and "Hanyul" especially when it is by annoying people relentlessly pounding on doors and nonstop ringing the doorbell. Someone who actually KNOWS Korean [not me] would have to explain/correct the variation of Taeho[Tae-ho]/Taewoo/Tae-ok. In the movie it is one person. "-ok" might be an honorific (formal address).)

Probably "now" instead of "ow".

I wondered about the source of the white line, which I did not even notice in VLC on my computer monitor. It was only projected large that it became distracting! I struggle just to stay awake during movies so I do not need distractions to my attention while I am actually awake. The rest of the household cooperated by staying away from me and keeping quiet the entire 2 hours, I don't know how in the heck that happened.

I also saw a reference in the closing credits to English and French translations, which I assume must have been used for film festival screenings. Whether the "professional" subtitling was any more consistent is anyone's guess.

I will leave the names as they are. We really need someone who speaks Korean to figure it out correctly.

I'm sure this version has professional subtitles, but you only get access if you're part of the film industry.
