[REL] The Blue Lagoon (1980)
Re: [REL] The Blue Lagoon (1980)
It was on SOME premium cable movie channel in the 1980s, maybe Cinemax instead of HBO, and that is how I first saw it: uncut. It was probably fullscreen instead of widescreen. I *might* still have the videotape I recorded from the TV broadcast. (I later sold the professionally-made videotape I bought, because it was worth a little something.) But most likely the first Brooke Shields movie I saw on TV was "Just You and Me, Kid" -- and that was for George Burns!

The Blue Lagoon - Open-Matte
Spanning several months and countless hours... an overlay of the widescreen BDRemux over the fullscreen DVD.
Primary software used:
MakeMKV: Extraction of BD and DVD components.
Digital Visions' Phoenix Film Suite: Clean-up of DVD material by means of detelecine (DVO Three Two), removal of coarse noise (DVO Grain GT), removal of macroblocking (DVO Decompress), removal of chromatic abberations (DVO Chroma), dustbusing (DVO Dust GT), intelligent sharpen (DVO Aperture), edge clean, upscale (DVO Scala). Note that no AI-upscaling was applied, soley a traditional filter.
Adobe After Effects: The overlay procedure itself. Requiring adjustments in practically every scene, occassionaly even at the frame level. Tracking points were used to stabilize segements, causing a very slight jitter on the frame. Color matching was also done here. Regrain with FilmConvert Nitrate plugin. Only the duration of the DVD was adjusted, meaning the BD's audio and subs could be muxed in directly.
AviSynth: General adjustments that greatly aided the process.
BD Reauthor Pro + Scenarist BD + BDEdit: Used to patch the new video into the pre-existing BD.
Versions:
- 14gb 1920x1080 encode (.mkv): Scaled down to this resolution for compatibility. Includes the DTS soundtrack, pure score, and commentaries. As well as the PGS Eng subtitles. Includes ambilight effect (blurring) in order to obscure the black rectangles present as a result of crossing sources with different ratios. A dynamic mask video is included if anyone would like to replace this with AI-inpainting.
[Code] -19gb Bluray-Disc (.ISO): The same as above muxed into the limited edition (3000 copy) Twilight Time Bluray. Bonus features are included. Note that it utilises Bluray-Java and will not work on many software players (like VLC). It is only intended for burning to a physical BD-25 disc or opened in PowerDVD (check RuTracker for cracks).
[Code] -40gb experimental 1818x1348 encode (.MKV): Cropped to 4:3, removing ambilight. Intended for experimental purposes, not recommended for viewing due to greater color instabilities and unconventional resolution, unless you find the ambilight effect particularly distracting.
[Code] 4K HDR upscale upcoming(?)
Hope it is of benefit

I confess I do not understand more than 5 words in succession in any of your technical posts, Kingfisher.

Re: [REL] The Blue Lagoon (1980)
I guess to put it in a more straightforward way...
The BD has the advantage of higher resolution and nicer colors, but is missing significant picture vertically. The DVD is open matte, but is obviously of significantly worse quality in many ways. So the idea is to take the cleaned-up DVD as a base and overlay the superior BD as far as possible, matching the sources in the process. So it's a a "best of both worlds" scenario. This final result can be thrown into Topaz...

Re: [REL] The Blue Lagoon (1980)
Oh that much I understood, in context. I don't expect to understand the details of software that I do not use. It is the "ambilight" that made me say WTF. I looked up the term and the uses of it I found just left me more confused. I have learned to come to peace with the notion that I am not obligated to understand absolutely everything. Acquiring some humility has been a painful lifelong process.
Re: [REL] The Blue Lagoon (1980)
Great work, KIngFisher.
As I said before, I prefer the 4:3 version without the blurry corners.
So let's wait for this movie in 4K and HDR. Whoever will be responsibe for that.
