MEGA "free" signup is a MEGA pain!

Post by Night457 »   0 likes

I sign up for a MEGA account and naturally they push the paid versions:

They give plenty of links for the paid versions, and still CLAIM one can have a 20Gb FREE account... but they no longer have a link to SELECT that option! They really did used to have the free choice right on the page, but it is gone now. I can not find it, scrolling up and down multiple times.

I finally figured out to go to the URL address at the top and backspace over the /pro at the end, and then POP! it went into my free account finally. Once I "chose" that option I could logout and login normally.

This is a warning for anyone else who signs up. If you find any other tricks to get around their nonsense, please post.

Oh, good to know. Appreciate the heads up about the shenanigans and the workarounds. I still only have one mega account, which is nearly maxed out on storage now. Gonna have to delete some old stuff I put there years ago.

Only ONE????? I wonder how many deadman has. I have many. I never delete anything. I just abandon the account and create another with another free anonymous eMail account... which I also soon abandon. The MEGA files stay available for download as long as MEGA does not delete them, and I have no control over what they decide to do anyway.

I have begun using this site when I want a "Disposable Temporary E-Mail Address":
https://www.guerrillamail.com

It is great when all I need is a confirmation email for creating an online account. The sites I sign up for never need an email address again anyway!

I have had an account for 11 years and I was lucky that at the first moment they gave 50GB for free

This is kinda hard to believe lol

From what I read, Mega deletes all files in your account after 3 months of the user being inactive

I'm still seeing some of your mega posts from 2024 still alive

(Also, sorry for BUMPing a thread that didn't really need bumping.. I just happen to come across this thread and had to reply to this)

Deadman might be up to date on what is actually going on with MEGA now. (???) I have not deliberately logged in to keep old accounts active in quite a long time because - let me count - hmmm, 49 accounts is very many to log in every month. Clever computer users will use a script to automate the logins so they just have to run it once for all the accounts and not have to spend an hour or more logging in and logging out. Maybe if someone DOWNLOADS a link, that keeps that file or even that entire account active. I don't even know how to track numbers of MEGA downloads or when the last time a file was downloaded. It is probably more accurate to say that files are ELIGIBLE to be deleted in a free account IF the account has been inactive. That does not mean that MEGA routinely gets around to actually doing it. They MIGHT get deleted. Keep in mind that pixeldrain's time period is less than 3 months now, right? If someone is desperate enough because of a deleted link they can ask for a reshare.

I still use guerrillamail and have documented all the login information even though I have NEVER returned to an account. I do not need to use any "tricks" to signup and login to MEGA so I probably was just not paying attention before.

Hm, I must be wrong

I read up that if you don't log into mega at least once every 3 months (You get several warning emails before the 3 months), all files automatically gets deleted from your account

This very well could be true. Since I never log in again to disposable email accounts, I would never know!

The other thing with MEGA since a few weeks, is that for me almost all Downloads stall at 90-99% and never finish, while they have a lot of "Problems downloading? Install the Desktop App!!" messages.
