Quick setup:
1. in Preferences> Connection> Connection select the connection profile from the list that is closest to your connection in speed and type.
2. Click Apply. This sets most of the settings correctly for you.
3. Go back to the profile box and this time select 'custom' from the list. Now you can tweak as needed to tailor it to your actual connection capabilities.
Optimal settings for any client depend on your connection speed and the kind of stuff you like to download. In most cases, default settings made as mentioned above will work just fine.
