Re: Bandwidth limit exceeded.
Being someone that has no idea about hosting a website.
What exactly is 5.25 GB in relation to a forum?
I understand what a GB is, of course. So is that to say that the FLM site (this site) is somehow 5.25GB in size..
How can that be?.. I mean hello, whats it all about lol
Help me out here.

Re: Bandwidth limit exceeded.
Nice question from an admin.
Whenever you visit any website, your browser downloads a certain amount of data needed to display the page on your screen. Some of this data is downloaded from the website itself; other parts like linked images are downloaded from the site where the images are hosted, eg. Imageshack.
Looking at it from the websites point of view, every visit to the site means that some data is uploaded to the visitor's browser. E.G. Our forum index page is a little over 100 KB without the banners and the images for the links to CIC etc. The images for the links add another 20 KB or so. This amount of data, although small, accumulates over time with every page viewed by every visitor adding to the total.

Re: Bandwidth limit exceeded.
I just checked my network logs. In June, I have downloaded 38 MB from this site.
Re: Bandwidth limit exceeded.
It's slightly more complicated, because images are usually cached and thus are loaded only once, but every forum page is loaded each time you click on it. But forum pages are text and are usually compressed (gzipped) by the server before being sent to the browser, so that 100K index page uses closer to 25K bandwidth.emuler wrote:Looking at it from the websites point of view, every visit to the site means that some data is uploaded to the visitor's browser. For this month the stats page says now that there have been 92,251 pages loaded. If the total bandwidth used is 5.25GB then on average each page took about 60KB (including images loaded from FLM). Last month we got cut off after 93,993 pages.
I am surprised actually that we haven't yet been cut off, I had figured Saturday. I was planning to ease the pain, if ghost couldn't get more bandwidth (i.e. pay the webhost more money), by doing a site rip and distributing it. I did the rip 3 days ago (I downloaded all the indexes and topics on FLM to my hard drive) but technical issues on my end in fixing up the links means it won't be ready for distribution in time if we get cut off. That's not the biggest reason I did it though, it's effectively a site backup plus I hope it will provide me a more reliable search, I got tired of loading lots of index pages to verify a movie wasn't posted when search shows no results (and often found it had indeed been posted). Stay tuned.
Re: Bandwidth limit exceeded.
What i did for now is that i hosted the header images on a different server. So i hope it will save a little bandwidth...
