However, since a lot of waiting is involved if you are downloading rare files from unknown sources, it is a good idea to have several files downloading, some rare, some popular, so something is always downloading. The waiting for the rare files hurts a lot less if other files are being downloaded smoothly in the meantime. I have to pause my other downloads when I get a good source for a rare file, but if you have more bandwidth, I suppose you won't need to.
Perhaps I am more biased in my opinion than most because of my slow connection; I have had torrents etc. die on me because everyone else had finished before I did. And good luck begging for reseeding torrents - no one ever responded to my pleas. ed2k is a lot different - total strangers will lend you a helping hand if you ask nicely, but when you have friends like here at FLM, things are great.
It is a little tougher on newbies because you haven't yet built up credits by uploading to the people you want to download from. Once that gets going, things only get better.
That said, the most common cause of poor downloading speed is incorrect configuration. Get HighID; make sure your upload speed is not set so high that you can't download at the same time; see that you have a reasonable number of sources - add or stop files as necessary. And stay connected for long periods at a time; if you restart your client/reboot your computer, you lose you place in every queue.
