Upload v. download speed
Upload v. download speed
I´m sorry for stupid beginner´s question, but how come that my upload speed is much higher (sometimes 4 - 5x) that the download speed? I do use eMule 0.48a, no firewall, no router afaik (but may be provider´s), and I let my PC to run sometimes weeks long without any break. Still I note download speeds rarely higher than 10 KB/s with simultaneous upload speeds round 50 Kb/s. I am on cable network, and I share a lot, as far my HDD space allows it. So what might be the reason? Sorry if this question was already posed and answered somewhere here, I didn´t find any clue.
Re: Upload v. download speed
At a guess because the files you are trying to download have few people sharing so you don't connect to download from numerous sources very often, whereas the upload bandwidth (that you have set) will be used up totally by people requesting files from you. Hope that explains it
If you were to go to Verycd.com and select some popular files, then you would see your download speeds increase dramatically

Re: Upload v. download speed
If set up properly, your upload speed should be constant for the most part (horizontal graph). You should set upload speed to no more than 80% of your connection's upload speed capability, or your downloading speed will suffer.
It is possible that the maximum upload speed that your connection can handle while downloading at the same time is considerably lower than if just uploading. Start with conservative settings, then when you are downloading steadily at near maximum speed, increase the upload speed in small steps until download speed starts getting affected, then back off a little.
btw. a firewall is highly recommended for your protection. Any computer that uses the internet must IMHO have antivirus, anti spyware and a firewall.

Re: Upload v. download speed
Thx Rich and Emuler for advices, I have limited my upload speed, and the problem ceased immediately. One learns during his/her whole life (and in spite of it dies stupid)! I observed also a slight decrease of download speed, but downloading goes on basically in normal way. Re firewall: huh, I discovered that using Spyware Terminator I do use also an integrated firewall without being very much aware of it, well, I´m basically a languages expert, not a PC expert
