In the lush landscape of the Mongolian Steppes 30 years ago, Bayingbulag, an orphan of Chinese decent whose mother has died and whose father cannot care for him, is sent to live with Nai Nai, an aging woman who scrapes out a meager, tough life as a shepherd along with her granddaughter Somiya. The two children are raised as brother and sister, together learning to survive the blistering summers and frozen, harsh winters of the dramatic Mongolian wilderness. Unable to afford a family horse like most of the others in the Mongolian countryside, chance eventually provides this newly formed family with one when an orphaned foal wanders into their camp. The new animal quickly becomes the boy's pride and joy.

Years go by. As a young man, Bayingbulag is summoned by his father to the city to become a veterinarian, but before he leaves, Bayingbulag promises to marry Somiya upon his return. Three years later, he is back, excited about the prospect of marriage, only to discover that his childhood sweetheart is pregnant by a local hearthrob. Crushed, he leaves and does not return for 12 years. Eventually returning, this time as a celebrated, accomplished folk singer, Bayingbulag finds his adoptive grandmother long dead, Somiya married to a drunken husband with five kids, one an illegitimate 12-year-old daughter longing for a father. A strong bond develops between Bayingbulag and this girl (ironically the source of his unhappiness years before), stirring renewed interest in Somiya and an awakening of his earlier feelings.

Shot in brilliant, rich colors against the stunning skies and broad landscapes of the Mongolian grasslands, this film is directed by one of the most prominent of China's fifth-generation filmmakers. It brings to life a simple but intimate story of childhood happiness, familial intimacy and unsentimental romance and gives us a rare look at a world many wrongly believe to be remote and distant.
