Along the way we meet a rich array of characters, guaranteed to have you laughing, recoiling in horror and marvelling at the sheer talent of these young entertainers. This is a story of ambition, shattered dreams, love, inspiration and rhythm. It's also about the people.
In Bondi, Marta Kan has her own dreams and is among the best junior ballroom dance instructors in Australia.
Her star pupils include a six-year-old Russian princess, Angelica Zaslavsky, and her seven-year-old dancing partner Natanel Abisedon. Angelica pouts and preens, a tiny replica of her glamorous and designer-clothes-wearing mother, Yulia.
Proud father Mario Mazzeo knows that he has the key to ballroom dancing gold. His 12-year-old son, Sam, can dance up a storm. He also looks sleek in a tuxedo. Sam is "sweet" on his 11-year-old dance partner, Kathaleen Fisher, the talented niece of dance instructor and former world dance champion, Alex Schembri. Alex is training them to be at the top of their form for the Australian Championships.
In many ways Ballroom Babies isn't just about dancing. It's about the human condition, examined through this yearly event. The heart of the program is about young people pursuing a goal and learning something difficult and how their families react.
