This is driving me mad!!!!

I mainly use VirtualDub & Easy Video Splitter.
I tried Boilsoft but it is splitting less than the other two progs!

Anyway, the error I get with the files that fail to split usually give the following error message in VirtualDub

Couldn’t locate decompressor for format XVID (unknown)

VirtualDub requires video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.
I Googled the error message which took me to a whole manner of message boards, all full of people willing to help me fix the problem.
Not one single codec they offered me helped.

Is there a splitter in existence that actually does what it says on the tin?

Thanks for reading.

Hmm.. that error usually means you haven't installed the Xvid codec. :think

Except I can play the xvid files that wont split, and GSpot says I have the correct codecs anyway.

Also, I do reinstalled my codecs to make sure I don’t have any conflicts now and again.

In VirtualDub do you see Xvid in the list of codecs?

Sometimes codec packs set things up so that Xvid files are decoded using DivX or ffdshow (they can do that). So the xvid encoded files will play fine, but the codec isn't there, so VirtualDub acts mulish. :bigups

Note: VLC has its own codecs, so just because it plays in VLC doesn't mean the proper codec is installed.

I found the list in virtualdub.
There are Loads of codecs and crap iv never heard of, and I don’t see the word XVID amongst any of it.
Maybe XVID is contained in one of the gibberish titles in the list, but I wouldn’t know which!

Do you have a proven link to the xvid codec, because I just tried to get one but AVG told me I was downloading some Trojan or other?

Cheers

I usually just use K-Lite codec pack. However, if you want just the Xvid codec, here is the version I have used. There are a couple of later ones but I don't know how stable they are.
